I had a listen to that Chickenfoot album (it's streaming online somewhere) and I don't really get it.. to me it's boring rock with awesome solos that sort of don't fit in with how cheesy and bad the lyrics are.

I'm listening to the new Russian Circles track and it's awesome, can't wait for their new album - http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/exclusive-download-russian-circles-premiere-dramatic-track-mladek-20110928

been listening to Mastodon: The Hunter.  early impressions are that it's good, although maybe not quite as good as the last couple.  i really like the sound of Mastodon, their records sound great, and i find i can actually listen to them since they started singing!  the early albums still sound great, but the vocal style was very wearing.  fine for a song or two, but over a whole album, it just irritated me.  the only problem i have with them is that a lot of their material does sound very similar, it can be hard to tell what song, or even album, you're listening to.  i do still listen though, because it's a sound i like a lot :)
a friend asked me what they were like a couple of years ago, i said it was like a heavy rock band in the seventies got a letter describing what modern metal sounded like, and tried to recreate that without ever actually hearing any modern metal.  i like that description, even if you don't ;)

also, this morning, put on the Chickenfoot III album.  when did Keef Richards join the band?
cry HAVOC!! and let slip the pigs of war!!!

^  I do like that description, very good.   :D

Just like you, I buy all Mastodon's albums because I like the sound.  But I do have great difficulty distinguishing one song from another, apart from a brilliant little melodic bit here and there (which won't usually be a vocal part).

Always nice artwork and packaging on their CDs too.

Just got my copy of The Hunter, but probably won't listen to it straight away.  I got the new Opeth album today too.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

Bought the new RHCP album a few days ago. Gave it a listen on the way back from work today and it is pretty decent. It sounds like them but is missing the spark of Frusciante. Strangely I could almost hear the parts I think he would have played had he been on the album. Josh Klinghoffer isn't at all bad but he's no Frusciante.

Maybe with a few more listens I'll like it more.
I think I hate being indecisive.

I haven't really felt much inclination to buy the new Chilis album.  The last couple have been getting rather formularised, and now without Frusciante as well.... I think the guy was the heart and soul of the band.

I think I'll just keep listening to Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Indeed he was Philly. There are some great moments on Stadium Arcadium (and By The Way). Personally I don't see why Californication is critically seen as their greatest album, clearly it is BSSM or Uplift Mofo Party Plan - I did like some of the Hillel Slovak stuff as well!

I also love the Frusciante solo stuff but some of it is a little niche.
I think I hate being indecisive.

I don't know it was just me acclimatising to the sound, but it seemed like the quality of the material really improved halfway through the album - the last few tracks are great.  That's only on first listen though....

Possibly my favorite song in the world. Best played fairly loud on some headphones.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

I've been listening to the new Dream Theater a lot. Some brilliant songs, but also some songs that sound like they tried to hard to show how incredibly tight and complex they can play as a band.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I'm not a fan, but reading an interview with Petrucci the other day he seems really stoked by Mike Mangini being in the band - and by the additional freedom it gives him as a writer and producer.  He doesn't say it in so many words, but reading between the lines I don't think he's missing Portnoy very much....

My wife just bought the latest Adele album, which is in the car at the moment, so I've been listening to that bv default this weekend.

It's actually really good.  Got a Cure cover on it, which is ace.
BKPs Past and Present - Nailbombs, Mules, Blackguard Flat 50's, VHII's & Trilogy Suite with Neck & Bridge Baseplates!

I once read Adele's music being described something along the lines of "music for fat birds on a night in with a bottle of wine and a tub of haagen dazs"
