Yngwie Malmsteen's Odyssey album (c. 1988), featuring Joe Lynn Turner on vocals. I listened only through the first three songs this morning but what great stuff is this.

Cheers Stephan

Ah memories. I was at college when that came out. In a free period I picked it up in town and proceeded to to listen to it on a walkman the size of a house brick.

Those were the days!

John Fogerty (and Creedence Clearwater Revival) - The Long Road Home

When I was young, I wouldn't be caught dead with a "best of" - if I was interested in a band I'd go out and buy their whole back-catalogue.  I realised I was getting old when compilations started appearing in my collection....

Anyway, Creedence is one of those bands I never liked enough to buy their albums, but I always liked some of their songs - and most of the hits are on here.  Must say, I'm not so keen on the John Fogerty solo material.... it's slicker, less raucous, more polished and quickly gets a bit boring.

Fuzzbox - Bostin steve austin

new re-release of the Fuzzy ones first album.  it's a fun and funky fuzzy pop album!  i always liked that band, and they're second record, Big Bang, is still one of my favourites.  their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody is magnificent! :)

Is that as in We've Got a Fuzzbox and We're Gonna Use It?  I remember the band, sort of, but not any of their songs.

the very ones, Philly.  and on the first album, they did indeed use their fuzzbox :)  they sounded rather more polished by the second one.  beyond their enormously catchy singles, and scantily clad red head singer in their videos, they had some great songs.  they actually reformed in recent times, but unfortunately their guitarist died before christmas.  i think it was quite sudden.

Bloc Party. Never gave them much of a listen when they were first popular but I really like em at the minute! Silent Alarm is an awesome album, as is Four. Great tones and interesting guitar parts.

I like the first album. Second one they lost it a bit. Third one was truly awful so I lost interest at that point. The first one is class. If you enjoy that check out the debut by The Rakes 'Capture/Release' its brilliant. The singer from Bloc Party stands in for the Rakes singer when he loses his voice lol.

Have you heard Four? Its much better than the 2nd and 3rd albums - worth a listen! I'll check out that band as well.

My brother likes Bloc Party and some of those other guitar-based bands who emerged around the same time (I forget their names, sorry....)

It's OK, but I just can't get really into them.  I guess I'm too old.

I love Silent Alarm (especially Like Eating Glass). Strangely I've never listened to anything else by them.
I think I hate being indecisive.

I was never into this sort of music at the time (think they were popular when I was in my "power metal phase" ) but now I really like the twin-guitar interplay. One of my favourite sounds is two singlecoil-sounding guitars doing completely different things that compliment each other in an interesting way.

I do know what you mean, I can't think of examples(!) but that sort of stuff is interesting.  Hard for me to understand, though, it's quite an "alien" sound when you've grown up on power chords and blues scales.

I'd love to be able to play various different styles like country picking, chord-melody jazz and especially some of the folk-influenced things Richard Thompson does.  But it's never gonna happen!
