I'm big on instrumentals, always have been since 87 when I got my first Shrapnel records compilation album (with Scarified by Racer X on it!!!!)

But to answer your question, its fantastic. Very retro in terms of tone and riffing and a lot of Gilbert's sense of humour and tons of outrageous shredding but always musical.

The only thing that bothers me is it doesn't sound like he's using his PGM, he's really into the Ibanez Gibson copies and although I think he get's the pickups rewound by dimarzio they are definately more vintage and maybe wired in parallel to get that really clear high end and clicky picking sound-
I do love his tone on that album though.

Cheers for the mini-review. I've always liked Gilberts playing. I got a few tracks off Limewire and was thinking about either buying GOOMY or whichever one has Down To Mexico on it as that has to be one of my favourites (after Scarified of course)..

I just got a new CD from a band called Fast Otto. I 'met' the guitarst on the Gretsch forum. this guy plays his TV Jones equipped Firebird through a simple fender Blues Jr.

Best piece of blues I heard in a long time.

Here's a link.

That's the fella!
I bought it when it came out (198???) and then lent it to someone and didn't get it back (ooohhh how many times has that happened?) but by some miracle I managed to find another copy (on LP of course!) in the record and tape exchange on Notting Hill Gate (around the corner from my flat at the time) last winter. Happy? OVER THE BLOODY MOON I WAS!! :D  :D  :D
Racer X, Cacophany, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Greg Howe... amazing stuff!

Shame that in Mike Varney's attempt to find every good guitar player in America he overlooked one simple thing, sound quality. Cos it sound's like it was recorded on cardboard with a knitting needle as a stylus. Oh well you can't have everything.

Yes it does sound a bit low budget!

I love the last track on side 2, The Villa by Doctor Mastermind! It's just mad! The shredding on the album is crazy and I used to play it to death. I think I got mine around late 88 but it had been out for a bit already i think.

Nice cover though isn't it! I used to gaze at it for ages!

Edit, i just found it and it says 1989 on the back!

Yes, I've got it by the side of me now! 3rd track on the B side called, 'Out Of The Sun'

There's some numbers in the small print, they look like catalogue numbers for the album that his track came from;

LP RR 9573/ CD RR 9573 2

 I wonder if you could find a copy out there in cyberspace?

Quick addition to this:

BYZANTINE

Crazy timings, often heavy as sin, occasionally very mellow, ripping solos in the metal/jazz/blues vien sick drumming and ultra-cool choruses (showing metalcore how its really done).

They have a moto of sorts:

"Beating the eyeliner off the face of metal"

Just found them this weekend and have hardly listened to anything else since.

Not my 'usual tipple' but I am really enjoying

Black Label Society "Sonic Brew".

Great for working out to, but gets you gasing for Miracle Man pickups
