Installing cloth grille on a cab which doesnt have one?

Ok so I just won this cab on ebay, doesnt look amazing but I'm thinking it cant be that hard to add a grille cloth?



The only thing I'm worried about is how to mount it as obviously you cant have the grille too close to the speakers. Doesnt look like theres loads of room from the speakers and the outside of the cab though, how close should the grille be to the speaker?

My idea so far is as follows - basically make a small frame which fits the measurements of the inside of the "lip" around the baffles, which I can then staple or whatever the grill around and then get some brackets to mount the grille/frame onto the cab? Or is there a simpler way?

Finally, wheres the cheapest place to get some silver Fender style cloth grille, like on the HRDx series? Matamp have some on their site but dont say how much..

That is exactly what you have to do.  You can use velcro to make the frame removable.  You can try ebay for the grill cloth.

Velcro sounds like a great idea for attaching the frame to the cab as well, as its made of the carpetty-felt type stuff I think.

As for actually attaching the cloth to the frame, will a regular staple gun be sufficient or should I superglue aswell? Read on another forum thumb-tacks could be used as well.

Oh and does anyone know what thickness/size the wood bars should be for the frame?

Depending on the colour of the red part of the cab I may just leave it as is, but one of the pics made it look a rather gay pinky purple which aint too hot  :lol:

When I redid my Princeton I used a staple gun.  You need about 1.25mm x 2mm (1/2x 3/4 inch for those of us who like pints!), with the wide side being the front and back (in other words the depth is 1.25 mm).  

On your cab there doesn't seem to be a lot of clearance around the speaker.  The other thing you could do is paint the top black and get metal speaker covers.

What someone in another forum said could be to take the speakers out and re-mount them from the rear (looks like its mounted from the front here) then just cover the baffle with the cloth instead?

Was thinking about metal grille but I dont really like the look too much.

If you are going to rear mount, it might be a lot of work depending on whether the back of the cab is removable.

Ok, I doubt I'll do that then.

I had another idea for the frame, as (Badly) pictured below.

#1 was my original idea, but #2 seems easier.

Only problem with #2 is that its probably heavier and I might have to do two panels because the top speaker is slanted, therefore there would be a gap/line between 2 pieces of cloth.. unless I can figure out some way to connect the 2 panels together in the angle I need. Sort of have an idea for that but could be a bit of a bugger to do..
