:D Not a fan but to be fair i dont like RHCP either so..........

What he does prove is you dont have to be a shredder to be rated. Johnny Mhar [ i think thats how you spell it ] was a highly rated guitar player who did nothing for me either but it was about being able to convey his own individuality in his playing that he did so well i think Frusciante is one of those types of players & thats no bad thing.

i don't think you can dislike him for not being technically good as thats not what he aims to be, he puts all his soul into everything he plays and you can't knock him for that

If you listen to Blood Sugar Sex Magik the playing is excellent, considering he was only 21 at the time.  And he was also only 18 at the time of Mothers Milk.  Before the 3 albums he made after rejoining the Chillis he had to basically learn how to play all over again and although it's very good, there's still something lacking compared to his old playing.

Where's Willo when you need him...

I do like frusciante's playing personally, and seeing them live twice I can vouch he is'nt always tecnically perfect, but 90% of all his solos are improvised. Worst part was Kiedis's singing, but I won't go into that

He isn't the player he was but I like the vibe he creates, therefore to me that qualifies him as a good guitarist.

BTW : OK he had a really bad drugs problem as had many of the heros quoted around here. At least Frusciante dug himself out of an incredibly bad situation. Unlike some of the heros, who still cry like girls.

So please dont be a bitch !

'LYNCH: Yeah, throughout history all the greatest bands, guitar players and musicians have been pretty $%&#ed up and wacked out—but it’s good for the music. There’s great advice for the kids—“stay high!” [Laughs] You do make great music, but you burn out a lot quicker too. I think I can do it without them, but I’ve done so many drugs that I think I could go into like a type of THC groove without really thing without actually smoking pot. I can just sort of put myself into that state. It is a balancing act though because I don’t lead a completely healthy lifestyle by any means. I just finished off a half a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts which are as addictive as any drug'

To me that has to be a good thing, not that I'm a particular fan of the Chillis but it's a change from the usual diet.

well i must say my top three  fave  guitarists of all time are steve vai, john frusciante and kirk hammet. sure steve vai is technically perfect and hammet just seems to play the right notes but john frusciante isnt about that.  john admits hes no steve vai and he said at one point when i was younger i listened to captain beefheart and other standard punk guitarists because to him it made more sense to idolise these people because he had a betetr chance to be like them than the virtuosos. john doesnt aim to be the best guitarist ever, he just wants to make music that means something to him, songs that express what hes feeling and in my opinion he is the master with a clean guitar using minimal effects and basic composition techniques. he has brought a lot of inspiration to young guitarists. he also writes music that is acheviable to re-create and lets face it how many people wish they could play like steve vai the first time they pick up a guitar without practicing, but in order to get as good as vai, youve got to be able to learn from players like frusciante and maybe before that kurt kobain who maybe cant play the cr@p out of the piece of wood they have in their hands but they can teach us alot about music.

im guesing youre teacher is biased on blues players and totally against shred or whatever, but do you see him selling out arenas around the world? i think its a shame that he has undervalued everything that Frusciante has brought to the guitaring world and mayb he should let go of this bias he has developed. my teacher too was exactly the same and even tried to convince me to let go of these roots.

but even shorter and sweeter he was voted 18th in rolling stone magizine for best guitarists of all time, so really that does count for alot.
to sum up my opinion, Frusciante rocks!!

I put Frusciante even higher on my fav list Mellowhead, but I don't think Rolling Stone counts for much  :?  They're owned by one of those companies that puts out mags like FHM. Which explains what Fergie was doing on the cover of a recent issue. RS has as much to do with music as bellybutton lint. Sorry just ranting...

lmao. well he was also ranked 28th in another magazine i read (ill have a rumage through my room in a sec) and the poll was voted for by other musicians from the popular bands so maybe their opinion counts more than RS. Hendrix was at top, followed by Jimmy Page, Slash, Brian May, Steve Vai then Satch and i think Hammet was after that.

Frusciante is my fave guitarist coz i can play his stuff which is awesom for a good jam with a few mates, you really get into the swing of things. especially with cant stop and Get on top!! where as playing Vai stuff is more of a chore than having fun. not that i can play vais stuff well :(

OH AND FORGOT TO MENTION, I noticed you have Frank Zappa as youre dp. man he could play! You probably know that Vai was in his band as the "stunt" guitarist, but Frusciante also auditioned for this role later on when he was about 17-18 but instead he decided on RHCP, and his reason for this was because, as i mentioned before, he idolised the standard guitarists and hillel was his hero just like John is ours :)

I've always been in two minds about his playing. I think he plays really nice parts, but I always think his tone is horrible.
