John Frusciante - Good or bad??

Im having a bit of an arguement with my guitar teacher. im sayin Frusciante is good (on the new peppers album he lets loose!) and my teacher says he cant bend in tune and that he generally sucks!! what with me being a beginner (playing 2 yrs) and my teacher being a seasoned player, im just wonderin if im bein nieve! but i cant see that as he sounds amazing!!

what do you guys reckon :?:

some guys like him, some guys don't. I guess the shredders/metallers/hard rockers aren't as fond of him, while the more alternative guys love him.

there is some fast playin on the new album, its almost shreddin. u got 2 hear it! theres also some nice blusey hendrix style and some wicked effects! the songs arent bad either :P

He never did much for me. He's good enough to do his job with RHCP. I have never rated RHCP myself anyway.

I like him - I like his composition (i.e. he writes for the song and not for teenage boys to cream off when he plays) and his chord creativity is really good - but then I like acoustic stuff more than electric and think all shredders suck, so I am well out of the voting pool.

i like him, not just talking about lead playing but his song-writing is awesome. parts like the verse of Under The Bridge are just awesome to me.

Agreed 100%, he can't shred and his techniques sloppy but what he plays is damn effective.

I was about 15' away at the recent RHCP concert here and I've got to say he's killer. Not really relevant comparing him to shred players  :roll:  He's got a ton of feel and his rhythm playing is far more interesting than the the root 5th stretch pentatonic cr@p from a lot of players (read: 80's guitar players). And his solos have a ton of feel, they say something. I don't think Hendrix could shred either.   :?

I think he is great BUT on the new Album, all guitar parts are rip-offs of existing songs or solos. My guess is he has lost inspiration at the moment.

And then I cannot help but be reminded of the poser guy in School of Rock, the one who kicks out Jack Black off his first band ... :twisted:

He's a very creative guy. Writes some good stuff and plays wirth his heart n' soul.

I saw the Peppers on the TV the other day and all I can say is that it's very sloppy. I really can't see what all the fuss is about.

I think he's got a style of his own, which is very important if you're writing your own stuff.  His playing is quite "relaxed" compared to the machine-like playing of Vai, Gilbert, Satriani etc but I'd rather listen to the RHCP over shredders any day of the week.

I guess I appreciate his style as my playing has similarities.  My rhythm stuff is tight yet fluid, but my lead playing usually has the odd dodgy string bend with occasional bum notes and is rarely completely and utterly precise.  However, it does have lots of attitude and feel and to me that's much more important than playing it perfectly yet sterile.  Your attitude can really show your personality and as my band said to me last night:

"Yep some of your string bends are a bit off, but you have Angus-ness"  :D
