Might have blown my MG250DFX. Need advice!
« on: October 09, 2006, 10:19:33 PM »
Hi All,

So I was in the fix it mood and unscrewed the 6 screws holding the head to this combo.  I pulled the head out and unscrewed the fan.  Anyone who owns one of these probably knows about the fans loudness.
With the fan and heat sink now unscrewed I plugged the power back in to see if the fan still made the sound.  If it did, I was going to replace it with a computer fan.  Anyway, I plugged the power in and hit the on button and a bright light happened and a loud pop.  Now the amp dont go back on.
Nothing was touching as far as I could tell.  Nothing smells burnt.  I did notice the fuse on the board was burnt out.  I guess that was the pop and light I saw.  I am going to go to radio shack and buy another fuse, but dont want this to happen again.
Does anyone know what might have happened?

The speakers were plugged in and the master volume was on 0, but with the loud pop and light the speakers also made a read bad noise.

My last job was upgrading hardware in client and internal pc's, so I know all the basic things not to do.  I'm guessing a solid state head is somewhat the same.

thanks  Chris

I blew my MG100DFX just last year an i pretty much had the same problem. But with mine it was pretty much because I was running the thing on close to full volume at twice the power load it was rated for. So I ended up having to send it in to an amp tech to find out wtf was the problem in the first place and it turns out I had blown most of my power circuits. Cost like $90 bucks to get fixed. Idk if thats the case w/ yours, probabley not considering your situation, but either way you should prob take it to a liscensed professional first. Those MG's are realy prone to breakage. Not even a month after i got the amp back from being repaired I broke the power switch off just by switching it from the 'on' position back to the 'off' position, Idk wtf is Marshalls problem when it comes to just making a good product instead of trying to make as much profit as possible. Whatever tho, i hope that helps  :) .

I was going to say "use this as an excuse to upgrade", but I thought it was too evil... seconded, though.

This marshall was given to me from my dad a while ago so I wanted to fix it.  I'm gonna send it to an amp tech.   thanks

^ ahahaha, owned.    I blame mark for getting me into this embarassing situation.

yeah, send it to a tech. I'm guessing unless it has sentimental value (which it probably has) it's going to cost you over the odds to get fixed, as most newer transistor type stuff is made to be replaced when it breaks, not repaired (that goes for most electrical stuff, not just amps).
