Hey girls!

I've been looking around for a wireless router so that i can get an internet connection on my laptop. But every one i look at seems to only be suited for BT users.

Is there anywhere that sells routers for NTL users?

nah seriousley I dunno where u got that information from dude? Wireless routers are a major pain in the ass so I've found. Basically there is no stand out one. To my knowledge all routers tend to work with cable or ADSL so thats no a problem.

If youre going to be a bit of a distance from the router I would definately reccomend going for a MIMO router and card, its a standard which is very good for range and signal which tends to be the main problem with wireless. Netgear make a MIMO router and card which I think its half price at PCWorld (I know shudder shudder).

Otherwise I would reccomend something by Linksys because theyre a division of CISCO who are the top dogs for networking technology.

I'm using a Belkin wireless router atm, and it's happily running 2 laptops on opposite sides of the house and 3 desktops (although the desktops are wired in).

Linksys, netgear or belkin are good brands though I find belkin over priced for what you get.

The linksys connection with cisco dosn't count for much (Cisco have been buying many smaller companys for years. Much of their corporate hardware is bought in, and given an IOS makeover (hence whole familys of equipment not supporting particular feature sets).

Look at http://en.fon.com/ for a 5$ router ;) which is hackable (ie put it back to the 'normal' firmware)

Alcatel (now Thompson) do very good ADSL routers (very secure compared with other products). Says the boy in a hotel bar watching all the images embedded in everybody elses HTTP traffic, the perverts !

And Alcatel, feck em, layed cable all over world for those silly beggars, the guys they sent onboard to 'oversea' it were numpties LOL

lets NOT go there. I was in New Zealand when French 'tested' bomb in Pacific last, OMG now THATS a country with solidarity, closed every french shop (no matter ownership) i.e. cafe,wine shop etc. and banned all imports and impounded docks stuff!

I won't, even though they need those huge bombs to cover their retreats (oops)

Many if the real big routers (the monster ones) are actually alcatels not ciscos (I may post a few photos of the routers I look after)

let's put it this way, they had us trying to trench a cable outside/off coast of Dover for cpl. months, sheesh. White cliffs of Dover, hmmmm, CHALK maybe? Clever lot that! Lol, take their money and RUN!!!!
Although NEVER had so many 'paid for' port call/jollies before :)

Hey they had the money it's their choice.

Could have been worse, if it was the West coast of Ireland it's mostly bassalt, you would still have been there.

i bought a Wireless Lynksys router from PC World just after last Xmas...

its fine, works a treat for my dads lap top, doesnt affect my own net speed either.

Setup was a doddle, Freeserve wants to charge me extra cash to 'rent' one of their own wireless routers, but a little know how makes any work ;)

I've had three thus far for various projects, and one for the house, and they're a dependable wee box, and reasonably simple (as in, a well shaved monkey could manage it) to set up.

I just got the cheapest one I could find (Pace), has worked a treat for the past 18 months. You can even get the cisco ones on ebay for £36.
