I agree with Carlaz. I like nice rich creamy bass and 15'' speakers do the job for me. 10'' or 12'' bring out the upper frequencies. I have a Peavey bass amp with a 15'' speaker and it makes itself heard.

Although I dont play bass myself, I know our bassist uses a 1x15" old carlsbro combo and it doesnt sound too bad. Definately loud enough for practise and gigs although I think sometimes it can be a bit too boomy/overpowering but thats probably as much to do with the EQ'ing as anything.
