First Post! mules bridge, blackdog neck??
« on: October 14, 2006, 06:12:04 PM »
Hey, this is my first post so bare with me!

Has anyone out there got a mule in the bridge position and a blackdog in the neck?

if so does this work ok, and if not, is this a bad idea and why??

I Mainly play led zeppelin music.

i noticed that a few people have got a mule neck and a bridge BD, does this sound good but i cant see anyone with the reverse.

cheers, hope someone understands!

I would recommend the other way round. Blackdog has more output, normally you want the stronger pickup in the Bridge.

BlackDog bridge and Mule neck will kick ass for everything Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Gary Moore, AC/DC, Purple ... well... everything :)

Why not get the neck one covered and the bridge one open coiled, like on the Page Signature guitar?

Enjoy!

I'm of the opinion that people should try calibrated sets before they mess around with different combinations.  What the product page doesn't really explain is that the neck pickup will be wound differently to specifically work with that bridge (the specs on the product page are for the bridge) - it's not just the same pickup with "Neck" written on the box.

I started to think this when I got my Holy Diver set.  The Holy Diver neck is a perfect match for the HD bridge.

Why not just get a Black Dog calibrated set?
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Cheers for that guys!

Thats what i was thinking about doing, with the bridge pickup being open coil. Ill get a cream one as i know jimmy page had a cream one in the early years, ive never seen him with a black one like the custom authentic ones though???

From what i have heard from peoples recordings the Mules give a brighter clearer sound, whereas the BDs give a darker sound which probably work better with distortion, so what i wanted was a mixture of the two.

I might buy a calibrated set, and then go from there...

anyway, thanks once again for your input!

What hunter said.  The Black Dog bridge - Mule neck seems to be THE Jimmy Page combo (as he had a stock in the neck in one of his Les Pauls and a slightly overwound bridge that the Black Dog seems to nail).

I couldn't see it having an overwound neck without a bridge that's at least as loud if not louder... that just doesn't work to me.
Real men turn their volume to 11!

Rebel Yells + Les Paul = the Ultimate Rock Pickup.

Yep Black Dog in the bridge (open coil in cream or black) and Mule in the neck (covered with a nickel cover) should nail the jimmy page sound and look  :)

O and BTW if you ever want to get a guitar to replicate JPs look without shelling out loads I recommend the 'Vintage V100 Icon Series in 'Distressed Honeyburst' finish.

Its the one on the right in the third section down

Its the closest I have got to his finish without looking at something over £1,000.

I hope you like

Glad to see a fellow Led Zep fan BTW  :)
