Your new BKP's,how much difference did they make?
« on: October 16, 2006, 06:09:58 PM »
Well, Iv'e decided on my BKP's for my Gibson, going for a Naibomb in the bridge and Mississippi Queen P90 (custom wound to match) for the neck.

I`m placing the order tomorrow complete with Black Nickel covers and the BKP logo on them - and I`m stoked.

It got me thinking, how was it when you fitted your BKP's? What did you notice first? How did they alter your sound and playing? Did you sit there with a crazy, huge grin on your face and play powerchords for hours until they clammed up like crab-boy? Or even get your first ASBO, by just cranking everything up to share the BKP experience with the whole flat-block?

I`ll post some new clips as soon as I have them fitted.

Especially looking for feedback from Les Paul players!!

well, even being completely tonedeaf, i was completely astounded with the difference in my Epi LP (got Black Dog bridge, Mississippi Queen neck)

but considering just how bad the original pickups were, even Seymour Duncans wouldv'e sounded better ..... ish :D

just as long as you have the exact tone of your guitar in your head before you plug in with BKPs, then you won't believe it's the same guitar

:D

(and yeh, constant Led Zep playing, with powerchords a-plenty :D:D)

Once you install them: Just make sure you got plenty of time and nobody complains if you play loud for several hours.

I noticed two things upon playing my first BK pup:

1. How wrong many companies have gotten it; and
2. How right BK has gotten many of the details that make a great pickup!

I'm not saying that every pickup ever made that's not a BK is garbage. However, by and large, BKs consistently annhiliate other pickups in a similar price bracket!

When I first played my Mules after having Epi pickups for over a year I noticed they just sounded clearer and more defined, with more liveliness, the stock ones just sounded flat and didnt respond to different picking strength very well. I have a SD Custom Custom in my strat, and it sounds really undefined etc compared to the Mules in my LP

However to hear the best possible tone from em you gotta be running into a good cranked valve amp from my experience.

I can only speak from the point of view of a single coil player but I would say that the BKPs seem to have dynamics and an open sound that is missing from the other pickups that I have tried over the years. They seem to respond better to playing nuances-this is subjective I do realise however I have had people comment on the tone of my guitars far more than before. All I will add is that with previous pickups, I have got used to the sound really quickly and started looking around for something else. With these I have no desire to change and, if anything, I grow to love them more each time I play. I am even toying witht he idea of getting a humbucking guitar just so that I can get me a set of Stormy Mondays or maybe Mules.

Well, the new BKP's will be being given a work-out through and Orange Rockerverb 100 and matching 4x12 loaded with Vintage 30's.

Personally, I think it's going to be a case of pure, sonic nirvana.

My only other thought is that I like my current pickups lowered to about 5mm away from the strings - it gives more clarity to my playing - will this affect the tone of the Nailbomb atall? Or is it all just down to preference?

how was it when you fitted your BKP's?

Here are my first impressions of the Nailbomb in my Les Paul.

What did you notice first?

The sheer ferocity of the overdrive  followed by the clarity & lack of microphonic feedback :)

I play that Les Paul a LOT more

My first impression is pretty much there. Clear, open tone, as if a blanket has been removed from the speakers. And that is a trait We have been able to find in every BKP pickup regardless of their different tones.:)

What I noticed when I put my RY set in, is that they sound more like PAFs than most anything Seymour Duncan / Dimarzio has to offer, but they're a bit louder... and you can't get pickups like that anywhere else.  Either you have a dozen pickups marketed as PAF replicas/soundalikes (many which sound nothing like a PAF too) or something much louder with a completely different voicing.

The only guitar I really plug in and play is the Les Paul since getting my BKPs.  That should say something!

I thought the exact same thing about the blanket off the speaker.

The first thing I noticed is that BKP's sound very alive. The notes are pushed out of the guitar and out of the amp. With other pickups it sometimes felt as if you have to drag the notes out.

The second thing is mids. They're perfect. Other pickups have an either ice picky harsh mid or a load of mud.
