155mb is probs about the same, as it is usually used by about 200 people at the same time, as it's more of a corporate solution to internet needs, although that said, i have been the only person using a 2Gb pipe, and $%&# me does that thing fly, only downside is that when you go back to normal speed, everything is slow again :(
Nope got it to myself for the next few weeks (for testing purposes of course) :) The other two 100 meg pipes are doing all the work (via the midlands and liverpool).
If you choose a propular torrent that is scattered across a lot of ISPs it's OK (2.5 gig in about 40 minutes) or a lot of torrents at once is OK provided theyre (once again) scattered across different ISPs. However for the most part you still have to live with pulling data from slow connections via cr@ppy ISPs who won't upgrade to what their customers require.
Any faster than that and you really would notice no difference
With ADSL I have yet to notice a difference between 4 & 8 meg connections (or even 2 meg to be honest).
Regarding faster speeds, friends of mine in the states are working on the implementation of "internet 2" and they can shift a full 8 gig DVD in about 2.5 minutes. The problem is that they have to use custom network cards
and write to mad drive systems to keep up with the throughput. It's also bugger all use as there is no where to copy the data from at those speeds
Considering BT, BBC & LINX are only using 1G into telehouse (though telehouse east -> telehouse north uses twin 10 gig links between sites). A 2G connection would be quite somthing to play with (providing you had somewhere to connect to and your machine could keep up)
BTW PCI and PCI-X network cards & drives can't even sustain 1g xfer rates anyway (you are likely to get 700 on a good day (under windows), or 740 inder net bsd)
