Author Topic: Need New Nut for Ibanez RT (Read 3100 times)

Getting it done locally isn't really an option, they're hopeless. :? Basically I need a new nut for the RT. The previous owner cut a couple of the slots too deep and it's got a couple chips, it's seen better days. I was thinking about having the finish stripped off, but not sure. Very plastic-y feel to the finish.

Any recommendations appreciated. Not a lot of cash to spend on this. (baby and school you know :D )

A blank or nearly-cut type thing costs a fiver...

I've changed nuts with a ten quid set of files a stantley knife and a hacksaw with great success

Once I recieved a guitar that couldnt be intonated; the bridge was in the wrong place, so I tried to lengthen the strings at the nut with a drill. There wasnt enough nut, so I had to send it back. I replaced the nut with the tools above. They send it to their tech to make sure there was a problem with it, and he found the incorrectly positioned bridge and not the replaced hacksawed nut :D

No harm no foul. Good method, just be carefull.

:lol: They sell sets files on Warmoth's site, I was considering picking a set up. Always great when you can do your own repairs. When I asked about it here he had all kinds of nonsense excuses about the price, which was about $120..... :roll: I don't think so

You can pick up a pre cut nut from stew mac, if you have a Fender or Gibson style nut. I get the shaped but not slotted and I like the Tusq or bone. I do have a set of files though (I got them about 30 years ago - both nut and fret files from Ibanez, when I used to work in a music shop). If you ever have to replace a nut, they are worth it, but you can do it with needle files if you are careful. You can also do it with oxy-acetylene nozzle cleaners, if you can fine them. They will set you back about $5!

It measure 1 1/2". Not one of the regular sizes.
