So what would be a good program to get into? Ive never used/seen/played with any of the major ones (protools, cubase)

do you guys have any recommendations for a NON sound engineer to get into?

Thanks guys

I think any of the major ones would be a good choice.  The key is finding one that suits the way you work, or which you find easiest to use (I tried Cubase and SONAR, and just preferred the way SONAR worked so bought that).

I'd recommend downloading some demo versions and just having a play with them.

You can download a demo of SONAR 6 from here: http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/kb/kb20061101.asp

If you have no use for MIDI Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro might suit you.
If you're 'not an engineer' you might want to spare money, time and frustration by starting with one of the stripped down version like Cubase SE, at a quarter of the price it can already do more than you might ever need. It leaves you with plenty of money for a MIDI keyboard/controller and a good drum sequencer software. Some very good free VST synth and effect can be found on the web.

I got a midi keyboard for 100 quid. That came with some good software and it makes all sorts of noises. You will need a soundcard with a bit of horsepower though! You can get all those backing tracks into the program and mix them all up really nicely.
