Good Neck Match for VHII bridge
« on: November 07, 2006, 06:46:04 PM »
Hello all:

First time post here!

I realize the obvious answer is "VHII Neck/Calibrated Set" but I cant find any specs or anything for it.  Can anyone comment on the sound/tone of the VHII neck and any other alternate BN neck options that work real well with the VHII bridge??  The guitar this will ultimately go into will be a PRS Custom 22 non trem.

I have a VHII set in my PRS Artist II, which is a 22 fret non-trem, so I think that it will sound exactly the same as you will get.   It gives a great old PAF tone that is good for the Cream era Clapton sound but can clean up to give a David Gilmour tone,  and gets very Fenderish in positions 2 & 4 on the rotary switch.  When you get the pickups, if you have the PRS 5-way switch, be sure to tell BK.  They will make the set with the magnet reversed in the neck so that you can get the correct humbucking sounds in the split selections.

The only other neck pickups I would think about with a VHII would be a Stormy Monday or Mule, but I think the stock set is really a great sound.

Thanks for that reply, I think I will just make it easy and get the calibrated set.

Tell me more about how these sound in your PRS, cause as you mention this is close to how they will sound in mine.  Do they handle well under high gain or cranked amp tone??  Also, on double cutaway guitars, you get less bass response than say, a Les Paul, so does the bottom end sound fat enough???

And of course (had to ask) can it nail the early VH sound when played through the correct amp??

they're calibrated for a reason.. i've mixed n matched but it's deffinatly worth getting the right one for eachother, his HSS matched sets are also fantastic aswell.

and yes the VHII bridge pickup absolutly nails the early VH tone.. hence why i use it ;)

They can do a great high gain tone.  TwilightOdyssey uses a VHII for most of his live playing with a Splawn Quickrod, so he is really putting a lot of gain on it and the VHII sings.  I found that the worst thing about the VHII's in the PRS Artist was it made my original PRS pickups in my Standard sound dead.  The Standard now has a set of Rebel Yells and also sounds great.
