Line 6 Recording stuff

Basicaly i'm a n00b and don't get how they work.

I'm looking at the Toneport UX1 and can't figure out if you need a mic or not, or if you just plug the guitar into it and it records it.

Or is it easier to just get a mic put it up to the cab and just record using a program such as Audacity instead of buying all this line 6 cr@p.

I have a UX1 and it's a cracking piece of gear. You don't need a mic, no, unless you're recording vocals or acoustic guitar. You just plug your electric guitar into the 'instrument' input and go from there. It's USB powered and the Gearbox software has a great selection of amp models and effects (make sure you download version 3 from the Line 6 site though). It can also act as a very low latency soundcard for if you want to run anything else through it, like Guitar Rig or Amplitube. I use Guitar Rig 2 and where I had loads of latency issues before, I now have none using the Toneport as my soundcard in the GR settings. I also sometimes mix and match Line 6 amps with GR cabs. Gives me more versatility :D.

The only downside I can think of is that you can't buy a footswitch for it. I just play through my PC speakers for the moment, and the sound is great, but you can't buy a footswitch that'll change patches if you're jamming to a track you've loaded into Gearbox. But it's a recording interface so I guess it won't happen in the near future.

Anyway, just my thoughts :).

I don't know about the toneport, but i have the podxt live, and that's midi controllable.

I think you can send the midi patch changing signals via the USB (whenever i change patch, rock the pedal, etc the MIDI activity bar on cubase flicks).

If not, and you have a fancy soundcard you can do that via MIDI leads

Can the toneport just be used for recording, like do the same job a mic does?

I'd rather not go through all that software cr@p, i just want to record it well and have it how it is supposed to sound, not with cr@ppy added on line 6 effects.

If you just want to mic up your amp and run that into your computer, there are plenty of audio interfaces that will do that just fine.  The Toneport is one of them -- I believe the UX2 has mic inputs with phantom power if you're using condensors -- but you might be able to get something just as good but cheaper without paying for the Gearbox amp modelling software that ships with the Toneports.

I've got a Tascam US-122 USB interface that works very nicely for either plugging my guitar straight in (for use with digital amp models on the computer) or for running a mic into.  But there are lots of makes and models that do basically the same thing with more or less bandwidth and numbers of inputs (depending on what you're needs are).

The main reason to buy a Toneport (specifically) is if you want both an audio interface and digital amp-modelling/effects software.

Well, if I were in the market for an audio interface now, I'd probably get the Toneport simply because it will do that job adequately and provide me with the amp modeling software for probably not much more (and that stuff might always come in handy even if I mostly wanted to just mic up an amp).  You can never have too many toys^U^U^U^U I mean tools! :)
