 or a cheap Ibanez Jem copy...

and anyway id rather live in a soft country than a place where people's 'security systems' require ammunition...

You are welcome to your country where the youth are better armed than Law Enforcement. Where Law Enforcement is so stifled by liberals they have little to no power. Where polls say the adult population in general is in fear of the youth. Where punishment is either non-exsistant to farcical.

I shite you not ladies and gentlemen! It's fecked!

Rock/Metal comes from ANGST! What have the youth today got to have angst about? Benefits, crime with no punishment etc. Thats WHY it's gone all soft.

And I promise, the first asshole STUPID enough to confront me on the street 'armed with his knife' I will cleanly break his friggin neck! I swear! What have I got to lose, hell even if caught murderer's are out in what 10 years or thereabouts now? And by pleading self defense, I'll likely get manslaughter which is a slap on the wrist (proverbially of course as actual physical contact is now outlawed apparently, as is shouting, gawd forbid a 'poor unfortunate' should have his feelings hurt) to what a suspended sentence?

Whatever, it's too bloody soft, so no-one is writing about anger/angst, ergo NO Metal !

Thats my opinion anywhoo

well i agree with you... but i do think its a combination of factors like this that have caused it and not one specific thing alone...

cause i doubt every single good rock/metal band in the history of the UK formed through angst... maybe in an ideal world where music is pure and true and its main purpose is a form of expression for peoples feelings and all that idealogical cr@p... but in reality i HIGHLY doubt its like that... some do of course, form through feelings like that... like the Sex Pistols i guess are a good example...

but anyway... yer...

id still rather live in the UK though.  :P

Gotta agree with dakine, theres not much in the current british metal scene :(

Continental Europe, Canada and the US is where its at. And where I'm not at :(

It's not metal I'm worrird about (though I would welcome a lot more), I just want some feckin variation, from boy/girl bands, inde that isn't even inde and that so called urban cr@p

I'm not too worried that other cap exists: people are allowed to like what the hell they want. Who am I to say?

its that I know fine well there are top notch metal musicians in this country that are getting passed over for whatever reason, that should be getting serious international respect. Istead they play in local pubs, and bedrooms :(

People are allowed to like whatever they like, though to be honest I dont beleive that they really like the stuff that is sold to them, theyre buying what theyre being told to buy. Are nike trainers any better than a noname brand I doubt it, but they buy what theyre told to buy.

There are indeed great musicians & songwriters who deserve much more exposure, and long may they continue trying and I hope they get the recognition they deserve. I may not like a piece of music but I hope that I can still recognise something that merits attention

Valid music used to come from frustration (sexual ot social), rebellion, anger or angst, but what is there to rebel against these days. Waddya want a song called Call Centre Blues ;)

Remember if you defend your family, preperty or yourself then you will end up like me with a bloody GBH conviction because the law sticks up for the bad guys these days :(

OMFG!
I wondered how long the 'genuine article' first BOY BAND would take to come up.
Yes yes, The Sex Pistols are synonymous with angst and very British yadda yadda but they were/are also a manufactured group by Malcolm McLaren.

Unemployment and unrest did wonders for the UK Rock, Punk, Metal scene in the late 70s & early 80s

I love reading these threads. I would summarise my thoughts by saying that the greatest innovative music tends to have been created by those who see their music as representing their struggle against the world. The music business in the UK now is similar to  late 1950's early 1960's.The record companies play safe with predictible indentikit "acts" that can be manipulated to reproduce more of the same. Whatever anyone thinks of the Beatles( you had to have been around at the time to realise btw-sorry to those who weren't-you missed a treat)-they changed things for a while and for an all too brief period, anything was possible and the likes of the Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Small Faces and dozens of others, were given the opportunity to fly. Some got lucky, others got stuffed but the music loving public where spoiled for choice. The deterioration started when disco emerged in the mid 1970's, there was a brief spark of punk/new wave but then it gradually got back to the music business regaining control and locking down creativity. That is not to say that great music has not emerged-just not enough. There are probably tons of great bands writing innovative exciting songs but they rarely get the chance to create.Hopefully the internet will enable them to get their music out-I am actually quite optimistic about that. Someone once said to me that 80% of music is cr*p and it is down to personal opinion how you allocate that proportion ( there was tones of rubbish on the 1960's too for that matter) but, whatever you call it, the next Beatles ( not literally playing "I Want To Hold Your Hand" )but creating what they created, is what is needed but the world is a different place and it probably will not happen. I am not surprised that Sam & Tom don't get The Beatles or The Rolling Stones- there would be something wrong if they did in many ways. For the record Rob, I don't agree about what you said about the White Album. Abbey Road was pretty good-George's awakening.  As for the state of the Nation- pitiful but still a damn site better than many places in the world. Thems me thoughts.

+1 on enjoying these kinda threads beatle.

and i guess its fair enough about the whole Beatles thing... you had to be there i guess...

but then again just to add to what you said...

about where innovative music tends to come from... that may be true... but i dont think innovative necessarily means best in all cases...

on the other hand ive only witnessed 15 years out of a damn sight more than that of musical history... so its hard to say.

The Stones, The Kinks (and especially the Beatles) changed music, I wasn't around at the time, but my parents held the Beatles responsible for the death of good music (they liked the first few singles). Listen to what went before the Beatles and you bay get an idea why they where revolutionay.

The Who (a band underrated during the 60s) may be best representitive of the changes these bands created.

When My Generation was released there had never been anything that sounded like that, it was practically a declatation of war,  even my kids are stunned at that song when it's played at high volume (and my daughter is into the DJ sh1t)

As for my comments regarding the White Album, by anybody elses standards the following albums where amazing, and George indeed did find his muse. But to me there is something lacking and too slick. The songs where there no dount, but for mr the albums where not :(

Their rooftop gig showed that they still had it, and personally I beleive they should have headed towards simplicity. Which ironically they all did as individual artists (some more so than others).

Rob...

^thats an interesting point though rob.... about your parents seeing the Beatles as the end of good music...

it makes me wonder... it could just be the same process over and over again...

yours and beatles' generation not liking a lot of modern music could be remeniscent of your parents not liking the new music in their time... maybe its just a thing that happens... i mean, what im trying to say is... your parents and their generation could have been saying exactly what your all saying now...
