Onboard preamps with BKPs?
« on: November 13, 2006, 01:40:51 AM »
Hey guys,
I should finaly be gettings some BKPs soon (december if all goes well) and I was wondering if any of you ever tried an onboard preamp with them?
I'm hoping it won't affect the tone and gives me low impedance and more controls on the sound, too good to be true?

I wan't to mount a master volume (up to +25dB boost, most likely +6/+9dB max for me when needed) + medium/treble active EQ (+/- 12dB with mid point) onboard preamp. I already got a good review by someone who got a 3 bands active EQ with a set of Mules. He says it opens up even more the sound, even if it is already good with the Mules alone.

Nice thought but without elaborating my advice would be don't do it!! Just down load some pre-amp circuit diagarams and have a look at what you'll be putting your BKPs through.

I have a guitar with BKP HSS set on and also an EMG PA2 preamp and I find it works well.
Like Bob I avoid going for too much circuitry on the guitar but the PA2 is pretty simple and gives a low impedance output too, but I would maybe abvoid overloading the guitar with gizmos

You can always build the circuit off the guitar to try it out first- mount it in a pedal or box and see how it works before comitting to fitting it onboard

Great fretwork!

I think that's pretty sound advice from Jonathan; you just have to be sure you're not going to lose more than you stand to gain.

there was a thread about this a while ago where somebody had fitted a set of nailbombs and an active circuit (not the EMG one, a better one apparently) and it worked to great effect
