I like to use the tone controls -  I like to keep my options open!
I have a mate who has 1 pick up no tone & only 5 strings - and he plays lead! (granted it is in a punk band!) i don't know how he manages

Probably that helps him focus on what's essential: song, melody and phrasing

and if he sticks to the pentatonic he only needs 5 so he has em all right there!
