BKP noobie help-mark IV

hey guys-I recently purchased a boogie Mark IV and my LP Custom has a Pearly Gates bridge-I want to venture into the BK realm-I like the P GAtes, but I am looking for something that can really grab pinch harmonics on the wound strings better-I dig the styles/tones of John Sykes and Viv(CS and HD)..thinking MM might be too much for the Mark IV(serious highgain already)-huge fan of Syke's neck tone...?? about best bridge option-mark iv has awesome clean channel -just don't want a "one trick pony"

ahh..the mark IV is extremely versatile-lots of fun if you like to noodle with settings,etc-not a "plug in and play" amp...but I have lots of free time-i really love the lead channel-very close to the legendary mark C+ lead tone-its just not the most attractive amp out there,but when paired with a 1x12 thiele cab....totally a monster-thanks for the reply!!!!

I really want a Mesa, especially a MK IV or MK III or something like that for that classic metallica tone.

check out the website grailtone.com and click on the "boogie board"-your one stop info shop on all things boogie-most regard the 4 as the best all around amp for that style of music-I concur!

I'd love a mkIV too, they cover SO much tonal ground but they appear in combo format 99% of the time and I'm always skint when I see the head versions knocking about.

I own a Mark IIC+ and mark IV

the Miracle Man sounds GREAT with these amps but if you don't want a "one trick pony" full of power then you can see other options.


on the heavy side: Painkiller, Nailbomb, holydiver

the "Painkiller" is the more all-rounder of the 3 and the nailbomb is the heaviest but VERY organic. The holydiver is a wierd pup... it sounds VERY heavy if you want and very "hard rock" if you wish all this retaining the organic and great harmonics it has.

nailbomb, holydiver (alnico V)
painkiller (ceramic)


I would also recommend a Cold Sweat Set to get those sounds.


if you want something lighter than what I recommend... you can wait for more responses  :) (I am into BKP for the Heavy side)

very helpful-sounds like I am trapped in BK hell-guess I will eventually be getting a few of these-keep the opinions coming!!I thank you
as far as the mk 3-7-800 bucks is a good price-main difference in Mark 3/4 is the eq-mk 3 has limited eq on all channels...however, a mk 3 can be modded to sound very much like the mythical MArk2c+..the mark IV is as close as you can get to the real thing-the mark2c+ is all over Metallica recordings-she is TIGHT-a little more sag in the Mk3-but it smokes,too!!!

octavio-with those powerful pups, explain how it interacts with lead channel of mk IV-i really have to dial in a lot of gain for my pgates to growl and ping like I want...then it seems that the amp is a little out of control..I am leaning towards cs and hd right now..but the s stevens clip with the ry sounded sweeeet-but I must remember I want my lp custom to be my monster geetar

ah yes!! the rebel Yells would be very very sweat as well!

to be honest with you, these pups are very controlled and the Mark IV doesn't have as much gain as lets say an ENGL or a 5150, recto, etc

if you enter "miracle man" reign you shall enter the heavy BKP output selection.

the thing is that you are not being very specific or don't give enough details on which sound you are looking for.

I recommend you to point out the Bands you like to play, guitar woods, and what excatly you want from your pickups.

then people will help you much more! because this looks like a "mesa mark series thread"

yeah..thought about that-bad subject line..
well, the gates pu has 8.5 k and an alnico 2, so I am wanting that john sykes/vivian cambell tone, but i feel like i might need to stay with an alnico-my jackson pc has a dimarzio ceramic pu, but i am not too impressed-I am a big fan of zakk wylde ,too..so i think cs,hd,mm,ry-i had some "hot rails" in my strat, but it was not a good mix with my mark-it was overkill-do you have a mrk iv a or b?i want to hear picking dynamics- i alternate pick a lot and i really dig in heavy with the tip o' my index finger if I am not alt. picking-doug aldrich!!I dig his tone these days,too-he plays suhr pu's, but they are $$ as well-my custom is like most..hogany body/maple top-I really liked to ry's, but I want to make this custom a head cutter-might go ry on another axe...at this price..only 1 at a time!!

here is what I did man:

ask Tim and use what he recommends!

and use that as your starting point.

if you don't like em you can change them before 14 days go by after being shipped.

I took the Cold Sweat/Miracle Man combo

and now I have to try with a Painkiller on the bridge.


because the Miracle Man was the "model"

but... no matter which one you get you shall be pleased, believe me!
