riff raffs or mules?
« on: December 28, 2006, 12:21:39 AM »
I am trying to decide between two pup sets and would like a recomendation.

First of all I will be putting these pup in an sg style guitar which has a full mahogany body (1 3/4" thick) that has a thick neck for an sg (59' les paul roundback with a double expanding truss rod) and a rosewood fretboard.

I was thiking of either a set of the riff raffs or a set of mules.  I was thinking riff raff's for that ac/dc sound, the problem is I don't always want to sound like Angus.  I like the mules for how versatile they are which is why I wanted them.  I play classic rock and blues with a bit of new rock (nickelback, puddle of mudd) thrown in.

Mules Ftw!

Your preference is almost the exact same as mine and as far as I know, Mules fit them perfectly!

Out of those two I would pick Mules, or even better, Stormy Mondays for classic blues + because they're going in an SG type. 8)
BKPS: Cryogenic Apache set, Mule set, Riff Raff, Stormy Monday.

Riff Raffs can do everything, they're not just "Angus".  Mules in an SG might have a bit too much midrange, which is fine if that's what you want.  Just be aware of that before you order.

If you want a bit of bite to the tone, go for Riff Raffs.  If you'd rather have things  a bit smoother then I'd go for Stormy Mondays.

Go for the Riff Raffs. It just feels right for an SG. They sound like Angus when you set your amp like Angus. Another amp setting will get you another tone.

I don't want a midrange hump so I was thinking the riff raffs would be a better choice because this sg is thicker than normal.  I love that dry, vintage sound that you get from the riff raffs.  They almost sound like the pickups are straining to sound - love it.

Grats on deciding. I guess the Riff Raffs WOULD better suite your SG than a mule would.

Hey dude jut a quick one to add to this thread - I recently put a set of Mules in a Yamaha SG recently. I think the Yamaha SG is more like a thickness of a LP, and the Mules sound great through it. Not quite sure how thick your SG is but all I can say about the Mules is that they have a very clear, defined tone, they rock.

The midrange hump that people talk about isn't bad at all, in fact I'm ebrasing midrange big time at the moment, which was something I didn't do before fitting the Mules. The tone is fantastic, and through a cranked valve amp, you're in face melting territory! Anyway, I'm really pleased with my set of Mules - they do exactly what I want them to do - very versatile, they rock it out, and clean up really nicely. Sound great in the Yamaha SG.

Your Yamaha SG has a maple top though doesn't it?  This will balance the Mules out a bit like they do in a Les Paul.  The Riff Raff pickups add a bit more edge/bite/treble so you get a similar tone without the maple e.g. in a solid mahogany SG.

Sean - you won't be disappointed  :D
