Albums Of The Year 2006 ?
« on: January 01, 2007, 03:19:36 AM »
:D I thought i`d get this in before Ben [TO ] beats me to it !!

Ok i thought this year we might try something alittle different. How`s about being able to pick only 5 albums from this year 2006 & then 5 albums that could have been released at anytime in the past. I`m aware that there`s lots of you young`ns on the forum that will be discovering older albums by bands for the 1st time & maybe you`d care to share it with the rest of us  :D

For myself personnally i dont think this year has been brilliant but certainly an Ok year.

2006 - releases

Violent New Bread - Randy Piper
Miss Crazy - Miss Crazy
False Metal - Brother Firetribe
Final Frontier - Freelight
House Of Lords - World Upside Down

Pre 2006

Iron Maiden - 7th Son.... & Powerslave
Johnny A - Sometime Tuesday Morning
War & Peace - The Walls Have Eyes
Praying Mantis - Time Tells No Lies

Ok there `ya go who`s next ?

 :D  8)
God I could do with a Gin & Tonic !

Best 5 of the year, in no perticular order:

Mastodon - Blood Mountain
Isis - In the Absence of Truth
Hatebreed - Supremacy
Khoma - The Second Wave
Tool - 10,000 Days

Don't know about pre-2006 releases, have mostly been listening to new music this year, for a change.
BKPs: Warpig, Miracle Man, Cold Sweat, Mule

Blind Guardian - A Twist In The Myth
Disarmonia Mundi - Mindtricks
Firewind - Allegiance

I really don't think 2006 was very good for new releases.
Black Dogs

Previous BKP's: Riff Raff, Holy Divers, Painkillers, C. Warpig, Nailbomb, Miracle Man.

I was listeniong to that a fair bit over the holidays.  My old man got it from the library.  Got to say that I wasn't very impressed.  There's some good stuff on it, but mainly I was disapointed.  And disapointed that I was disapointed as I'm a BIG Floyd fan.

As for the best 5 albums of the year, I've not got enough time to have a think but I've just got Rubber Factory by The Black Keys and it's wicked.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

I agree - I don't think there were many great albums released this year.

Sikth - DoaDD
Tool - 10,000 Days
Only listened to a bit of ISIS but liked what I heard.
Looking forward to the next Oceansize album.
MM set, warpig set, about to be fitted - custom 7 bridge 'pig, CS7 neck.

Bit of a metal theme going on here?  I haven't a CLUE who most of these bands are!!!!

Album of 2006 for me was Iron Maiden - Matter of Life and Death

Great old stuff I discovered last year?

Rammstein - Mutter
AC/DC - Powerage

Okay, this took a lot of thought due to the limited nature of the list. Here's my pick for TOP ALBUMS OF 2006:

5. Queensryche - Operation:Mindcrime II
As good as the original? No. But easily the best post-DeGarmo QR album yet. Some very tasteful shredding from Mr Stone, as well. It gets to the top 5 based on the quality of the soloing alone.

4. Blind Guardian - A Twist In The Myth
Kinda spinning their wheels on this album, but it's still head and shoulders above most power prog. The new drummer is awesome, as can be expected. The lack of guitar solos almost pushed the album out of the top 5, but ... Hansi!! Plus, not everyone can make a cool song about Peter Pan!

3. Joe Satriani - Super Colossal
Can't say too many good things about this album. Stunning mix, incredible guitar playing, melodic out the wazoo ... in short, it's colossal!

2. Jon Oliva's Pain - Maniacal Renderings
What do you get when you take old Chriss Oliva demos, have them worked on by the other half of the Savatage writing team, and then have one of the best guitarists in the underground solo over them? An hour of pure old school metal that will kick you in the teeth!!!

and the No. 1 pick goes to ....

1. Cellador - Enter Deception
True Metal. \m/

Albums not released in 2006 that I listened to the most:

1. Coheed & Cambria: Burning Star IV
2. Rush: Roll The Bones
3. The Beatles: Help/Rubber Soul (I have em on a single CD)
4. Peter Gabriel: Security
5. Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here

New (Yes, I know some of these may have been released in 2005 but they were new to me in 2006 - I've fallen behind with my CD buying :))

In Flames: Come clarity
My Dying Bridge: A line of deathless kings
Exodus: Shovel headed kill machine
Testament: Live in London
Arch Enemy: Doomsday machine

Old (Isn't this basicallly asking for your all-time top 5 CDs?  assuming that you actually listen to your all time top 5 & none of them were new...)

Opeth: My arms your hearse
Exodus: Force of habit
Obituary: The end complete
Bolt Thrower: ...for victory
Napalm Death: Fear emptiness despair
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)
