Anyone know much about old vinyl record players?
« on: January 06, 2007, 05:31:25 PM »
We were clearing out my grandmas old house today (shes had to move into a home) and I'd never noticed it before but theres a big old "Alba Stereo" gramophone system with built in radio and speakers. Cant seem to find much information about it on the internet. Just interested to see if its worth keeping or getting rid of really. If anyone knows of any decent sites with this kinda information I'd appreciate it :D

Thanks

Alba were not, so far as I recall, one of the more upmarket makers. Very budget and so sound quality is not likely to be great- someone will probably want it though.

Yeah, I know of modern alba products being cheap cr@p but wondered if perhaps the older ones were better.

I kinda want to keep it just because it looks cool, I'll have to get a pic soon.

depends on if it's belt or direct drive, has multiple speeds and a high-quality stylus arm with auto-return.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

Have you got a picture Tom?

It's not one of those huge old stereogram things the size of a sideboard is it?  We used to have one of those when I were a lad.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I think not!  If I want to remember my lost youth, I can dig out my old denim jacket with the cover of "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" embroidered on the back.

Mind you though, I still have 1,000-odd vinyl LPs and I've got nothing to play 'em on at the moment...

If you do throw it out, check for tubes first.  My DJ mate picked one up a while back.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.
