Eminence Red Coat Speakers...

Interesting. I've definitely come to the conclusion that the "right" speaker for an amp is very dependent on the amp circuit.

I had the chance to play the Matamp "wall" in late 2005: 6 Celestions, 5 Eminences and 1 Jensen, all on a switch so you could hear them with the same amp. All of the Eminences sounded horrible - too shrill and trebly, no body. All of the Celestions were much, much better. I don't think this is just me, either: I heard recently that Matamp haven't sold ANY Eminences at all.

I'm sure this isn't because Eminences are bad (they're used all over the place, after all) and I'd probably love them in a different context.

The moral of the story is to match the speaker to the amp.

Dave - I got mine from a guy in Hull but I think that he has gone out of business. He used to advertise on eBay and on the web but his website is no longer active.

Other than that I could not find anything useful in the UK other than Blue Aran - loads in the USA but I guess that postage might be a tad on the high side.

my uncle has a few old radio speakers lying around, we were trying them with my valve junior.

You'd be amazed how different they sound, it sounds like a different amp with the different speaker.

gotta say i thought celestions were great but didnt sound as good, tended to sound a bit shrill especially the Vintage 30!

I orderd my Governors from Thomann.de and my Private Jacks from Blue Aran..

Blue Aran manged to get me a 2nd private jack they didnt have in stock within 2 days which i thought was pretty impressive.

Thomann.de on the other hand took weeks to deliver my Governors and i couldnt speak to a single person about it they never once returned my emails or answered the phone, but they eventually arrived intact and very well packaged.

I have a lot of different speakers and do like the Red Coats (and Patriots).  That said, with the MiniMat and the Matamp Speaker wall, I chose the Heritage G12M for my mini-Mat.  The cab arriveds yesterday, but I need to collect it.  Tomorrow I will compare it with the Patriot Blue Tick Hound that I have been using.

I also have the Wizard (excellent G12H replacement), and we were running TO's Splawn through a pair of Tonespotters, which also had a great sound, though not quite as aggressive as the Wizard.  For a lower power amp, I would really recommend the Blue Tick Hound, I've used it with the MiniMat, Lexicon Signature 284, Fender Deluxe and my 8 watt Marshall clone, and it sounds great for blues and rock with all of them.

I can also recommend the 10" speakers.  I have the RamRod, Delta Demon and Lil' Buddy.  They all blow the Celestion 10's away.

However, the Celestion Sidewinder is still my favourite allround speaker, though I do want to hear the new Eminence Commonwealth and the Lynch V12.

how would you describe the tick hound's tone? I'm looking for more of a british rock or blues rock tone with the speaker (in a 1x12 format), it also needs to sound pushed enough with low wattage.

also, if you don't mind, how would you describe the tone of the minimat (I'm sure I've asked you this before, lol)? British with american-style tubes (you have the 6v6 one, right?)? Or more american in character?

Well I set up the Mini Mat, but I couldn't use the Blue Tick Hound as it is with a friend and in the end yesterday I didn't have time to get it back!  Comparing the G12M to the Tonespotters though, I would have to say that on clean Strat tones, the Tonespotters are pure Hendrix whereas the G12M is a little brighter - but my G12M is new, I think it will settle in a bit yet.

It was 10pm when I got to try them, so I will do the Les Paul and overdrive tones today.  I remember thinking that the Blue Tick Hound had a really great sound and the overtones with a lot of drive were almost perfect, but I think the G12M is very similar (remember mine is the 20W 15ohm version).  Eventually I am going to put a G12H in a bottom cab for the Mini Mat (this is why I have the 15ohm version).

I should also tell you that both cabs are open backed, and the Tonespotters are a 16ohm 2x12 cab.

I don't find the mini-Mat American at all.  Actually it is really very Matamp sounding (I guess that shouldn't be a surprise though).  It really isn't loud enough to gig with (unless you play in a coffee bar).  I was thinking of a First Lady, but I haven't had chance to hear one yet.

Eminence recommended the Private Jack for what I wanted when I emailed them a while ago, I gather that's the eminence version of the greenback.

I'll probably order one eventually- I need to figure out if I'm going to try to mod the Valve Junior first, though, so I know which impedence to get the speaker in.

EDIT: just to check, did the tonespotters sound "pushed" enough with the low wattage of the amp? That's my only concern with the eminence, the private jack is 50W- though if what I hear is correct, they're rated differently to the Celestions anyway, and Celestions are quite conservatively rated.

eminence speakers tend to break up earlier than there Celestion counterparts i've found which i like it adds that lovely crunchy sexy sound! :) yum
