Picking a Bridge Pickup
« on: January 11, 2007, 03:35:18 AM »
Yes, another one of those threads. I have heard/read a lot of good things about Bare Knuckle Pickups so I decided to take a look around and find as much information out about them as possible.

Anyway, I have a Caparison Dellinger and I'd like to get a new bridge pickup to make the most of it. It's a mahogany bodied guitar, bolt-on, ebony fretboard, Floyd Rose, etc (just in case some BKP are more suited to certain tone woods).

I play in C standard and sometimes B standard tuning. Predominantly melodic death metal like Carcass and Arch Enemy, as well as plenty of thrash such as Slayer, early Metallica, etc. Basically plenty of high gain stuff. I should add that I'm playing through an Engl Powerball.

Look forward to your suggestions!
I use Warpigs, Nailbombs, Holy Divers, BlackDogs and VHIIs.

I reckon Nailbomb, check out Andy RV's clip http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4796&highlight=dellinger
He's also got a Dellinger and an ENGL and gets a really good tone.[/i]

Thanks for that clip gingataff. The Warpig and Nailbomb are obviously the two I've been looking at.

Which of the two generally responds to low tunings the best? I'm after something with a tight bass response, plenty of bite but an overall dark tone.

that's the warpig all over. the Nailbomb has a more PAF-style tone. (so i've heard on the forum...)

I think I'll go with the Warpig. If it doesn't turn out to be what I like, I can always get a Nailbomb later  8)

I've heard the Warpigs with ceramic magnets mentioned a few times also. Where can I order one from? I don't see them mentioned on the site. Also, is it possible to get different covers for warpigs?

You can order one direct from BK. Just tell them you want a ceramic magnet.

You can get any cover, or uncovered (look in the gallery: forum page with pics of pickups, many of them warpigs with different looks). I have one with standard allen bolts and camo and one ceramic with double screw pole chrome finish.

P.S. I wholly recommend the ceramic mag out of the two for what you play. The A5 is GREAT for it, but the ceramic is perfect.

check out the DC ratings on the pups, ceramics in a warpig would be OVERKILL without a coil split installed to get a cleaner tone; for those 'magical, sparkly' moments we all enjoy...

well i do...

You cannot use DC resistance as your guide! It is not an accurate measuerment of a pickup's output!!

I'm using it as a guide for how well it will work clean, not it's output.
the higher the impedance the less power is needed to distort an amplifier, unless i have heard from inaccurate sources...

Hermz I went through the same quest a little bit ago with my Carvin DC200 (all mahagonay body, ebony fretboard, and a floyd as well). I play similiar style of music and though I have a Splawn Quickrod instead of Engl I'd recommend the Cermic Warpig or for a lower output alternative the Miracle Man. It was a tough choice between the two but in the end I went with the Ceramic Warpig as I'll be playing dirty 95% of the time on this axe so cleans weren't really an issue. I'm also a go big or go home kind of guy so the Warpig suits me, I'll let you know once it's installed how it sounds.

Herein lies the problem - how can you give advice about pickups you don't actually own?

Regarding the original question, my first thought was AndyRV's excellent Nailbomb clip too.  If I was planning to go back to detuning down to C or below (I've settled on Eb in recent years - must be getting old :)) then of the BKPs I have, Nailbomb would be high on the list but I also like the tightness of the Miracle Man in my FV & it handles fast downpicked riffing really well.  Probably MM of the two for me :)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

I don't care if the ceramic Warpig doesn't clean up well. That's what I have a middle and neck pickup for. I've decided to go with the ceramic Warpig. Just need to decide what covers :D
