Strat - finished! - Nailbomb / Apache / Irish Tour
« on: January 11, 2007, 11:13:20 PM »
I've put the stock HSS guard on my Strat-copy back and wired it up in a more traditional way. :P

Nailbomb bridge (raw nickel - it's ageing really nicely), Apache middle, Irish Tour neck. 500K volume control with treble bleed mod, 500K tone controls for the IT and the NB (the 3rd position of the switch is bridge + neck in parallel), .022 mF cap.

The Nailbomb is... well, you know the Nailbomb. ;) Fat, articulate and full of harmonics, very aggressive yet organic - chaos in a pickup indeed. 8) Nailbomb + Apache is a more aggressive Strat bridge + middle quack sound with a lot of bite coming from the Nailbomb. Nailbomb + Irish Tour is a deep, smooth and slightly quacky sound. Apache + Irish Tour was really surprising because despite the IT being fuller sounding, together with the Apache the sound is very clear yet sweet. The Irish Tour with 500K volume doesn't really sound like a vintage Alnico V single but it's not an overwound sound either. It has a lot of bite and handles overdrive easily. Either clean or overdriven, it's a nice choice, if you don't like beating the hell out of your Strat while playing but you want to sound as if you did so.

I would've never thought that playing with the tone control can be so much fun! The entire range of the tone controls is useable!

I know... I know... clips...

I liked the pickguard you had before where the mid & neck single coils were quite close together (or was that a different guitar?)  Is it the Apache RW?

+1 on clips :)

Interesting choice of pickups there. I love the Apache in the mid position - it's my fave mid pickup ever. I haven't tried it with a 500Kohm pot though. The highest I've been is about 350K and it was still very nice and not too harsh or "scratchy".  I can well believe that the IT/Apache combo sounds sweet.  And as others have said too - you have a very nice looking guitar.

 cheers,
