Hi guys, reading the forums and there was a post about someone buying a dean cadillac, made me pick mine up and look at it again... its been sat idle for a while now as ive contemplated what to do with it... i love the neck as it just feels right to me, but im not sure on the parts used, they feel/look a little cheap...

Its a dean cadillac select, amber burst quilted top, gold hardware.

What im going to do is switch the hardware out for black stuff but im having trouble finding reviews on the parts im interested in... will also be putting in either a set of miracle man or nailbomb pickups depending on my mood at time of order (i have a miracle man set atm in another guitar and love them but might fancy something different)

Parts im looking at are, a gotoh tune o matic and sadle, i was thinking tonepro but i read that theyre the same oem TOM only difference being the locking screws on the tonepro (really cant justify the insane price leap for a simple thing as a screw)

Either sperzel or planet waves locking tuners... they are similar in price but im not sure if theres any performance difference...

I agree with you about the TonePros hardware, all their tune-o-matics are modified Gotohs but for more than twice the price. It's neat that your bridge won't fall off if you remove all the strings, but I'm not convinced by their claims of improved sustain etc.

As for the locking tuners, I've got Schallers, Planet Waves and Sperzels and I like them all. The PWs have built-in string clippers which are neat, but hardly a huge advantage. The Sperzels are very lightweight, which is great if your guitar's a bit neck-heavy.

Which one to choose depends on whether you mind drilling holes in the headstock or not - the Sperzels will almost certainly need holes drilled for the "pins" which hold them in place; Schallers will directly replace a lot of Gotoh tuners with no additional drilling; Planet Waves will directly replace some Kluson copies and possibly Grovers (not sure about the Grovers, I haven't replaced any on my own guitars).

I don't suppose you would know if Sperzel locking tuners can be used to replace non locking Sperzels without any hole drilling ?

I'm 95% sure they'll be direct replacements Rob, it certainly looks like the locking pin thingy is in the same place. But I'm judging from pictures - I've never owned the non-locking ones.

Here are the specs for the locking version, if it helps:

Does this mean you've bought one of those Eggles with non-locking Sperzels?

Indeed it means exactly that, a nice little hard tail Berlin Pro, mahognay with quilted maple top in greenburst. Built in 97 and never out of the storeroom.

It needs a little work done, the pickup selector needs rewired. The Kent Armstrong pickups are a bit shrill in the top end, especially through a fender amp. However I will hang on for a few weeks to see if they grow on me.

I have developed an intense dislike of restringing guitars due to having to set aside nearly 2 hours to restring the Ric 12 string properly (the headstock and R tailpiece are the work of a truely brilliant but incredibly evil mad person). Hence the locking tuner question

I even got looking at an original 63 strat , and that was very sweet indeed (but it's not for sale even if I could afford it). I would definately recommend the store as they kept me supplied with coffee in the two hours that I spent there. A proper independant retailer that had a very wide range of guitars (unlike the London retailers) and an excellent attitude.

Sounds excellent, especially in greenburst! Many's the time I considered getting an Eggle years ago, but I always felt they were a little too expensive for a home-grown product.

Know what you mean about the locking tuners - I put some on my LP and suddenly string changes were so easy, I've gone locking-tuner crazy. They'd be no good on a 12-string though, seriously neck-heavy!!

Sperzels are great
We keep loads in stock
We also keep the Gotoh TOMs and tailpieces in black as discussed

We do stock the tonepros ones too

The best thing I like from Tonepros is the locking tailpiece studs rather than the little grub screw fastening ones - think they really can add tone benefits and resonance coupling from tailpiece to body

Thankyou for the replies, and nice advertising feline :-P il go check your website out hehe, looks like it will be a gotoh TOM and sperzel tuners, you dont happen to stock black, metal, slanted bridge/neck humbucker rings too do you? i can find the rings in all sorts of finishes/configurations but not black in the desired type :-(

I decided to sleep, well there are Eggle bargins about these days as I found out. As for lockers on a Ric 12, they wouldn't fit as the headstock it'same size as a regular 6 string (which is good and bad) :?

I have to say that I have made some good friends on this forum and have had the chance to do some cool work for people.
I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the London Guitar Show this year- we will have a similar stand to last year (just across the way from the Bare Knuckle stand) so there will be space to try out stuff as per last year.

WL - do you want the rings in a flat bottomed version? If so then they will be available in about 3-4 weeks. We have them in arched for a Les Paul type guitar

Gotoh hardware is very good for the money, I've been impressed with it. If you want a full Gotoh set of hardware (in gold) let me know and I'll do you a bargin. I need some silver ones instead

There are Eggle bargins about but you have to be careful, Patrick Eggle forum is a good way to go. The ones made after the factory was sold were OK, but not great by any means. My axe is about the same as Kilbys, except in grey/black flame and the Anniversary model and it only cost me £150 with no hardware and it still needed a good old fashion buffing. Got locking Sperzels for it, but still need to get a few bits (I've had it about a year now and still not finsihed it). It was built around '96 too :P

Hey Feline :-) id need flat bottoms, should i use the enquiry form on your website to place an order? i think sending/taking my guitar in would be abit painful as im quiet a ways north of you (about 4 hours with good traffic) lol.
