BKP's in a Standard
« on: January 19, 2007, 07:13:08 PM »
Hey everyone,

I haven't posted in awhile but I just recently had a guitar swap and want to get some opinions on some BKP's to throw in it.  Its a Les Paul Standard.

I know this question comes up a lot but any help would be appreciated.  I am looking for something that can go from pretty clean to pretty distored.

I kind of dig the Maiden/Mastodon tone for my overdrive.

I am currently using my paul through a Laney AOR Pro Tube 100 head with a SD-1 in front of it w/ a 4x12 Marshall cab.

Oh yeah I was checking out the rebel yells... yah or nah for the sound I am striving for?  Thanks again and cheers!!!

Hi,

On the classic records, I think Maiden were using DiMarzio Super Distortions. They have ceramic magnets and a DC Resistance of 13.68k. These days they are using Seymour Duncan JB Jr and Hot Rails. Bareknuckle don't do single coil size humbuckers, but I think full size ones tend to sound a lot better anyway. Those Seymours are about 16k and also ceramic.

I'd think your best bets from the Bareknuckle line would be (in order of preference) Holy Diver, Cold Sweat, and Nail Bomb. By all accounts, they are great metal pickups that can also do clean.
Bare Knuckles owned: Mules, VHII, Rebel Yells, BKP-91, Strat 63 set, Riff Raffs.

What about the Mini-Mule? it may not be the size of a single coil but it's the smallest you'll likely get here...
Maybe you could ask Tim to make you a stacked sinner...
I too use chicken as a measurement.

The single coil sized humbuckers are used by Dave and Jannik in their Strats, they're not used by Adrian though. As far as I'm aware he still uses a DiMarzio Super Distortion in his Strats (he apparently has Texas Specials in the neck and middle positions, but almost never uses them).

Adrian is also the only one of the Maiden guitarists to use a Les Paul (though he seems to prefer his SG these days). As far as I'm aware he uses the stock pickups in his Gibsons, so a Mule may be a good bet.
Sinner, Irish Tour, Mothers Milk, Trilogy, Mule, Black Dog, Mississippi Queen, Warpig

Going from the guts on tone -- and despite the existing suggestions -- I'm gonna suggest Crawlers anyway! :)  But the Holy Diver also comes to mind ....
