Pickin teh BK!
« on: January 23, 2007, 02:44:58 AM »
About picking the right BK, how does anybody do it? I see like 15 humbuckers that I know i would like each one. I have no desciption of the defifferences of them anywhere. And I have clips of various equipment, guitars, amps, distortion levels. I cannot pick 1 of these pickups by listening to varying samples. Fror them to have any affect they would need to be all the same setup and equipment so someone can hear the tone changes. Anyways, how do you guys pick a BK out? Is there a description of the tone of each one anywhere?

Give us a description of the style of music you like to play. Then the gang will find the pickup for you. Of course after their preferences.

You mean, besides the descriptions on the BKP web site's Products pages ....?

Seriously, I mean, I know those could be better, but it's not as if there're no descriptions ....

Its probably best to email Tim with the specs of your guitar and what kinda tone you're after. He's never wrong

a good way to choose is to look up the songs/bands the pups are named after and if yu like the tone - buy it

+1

And the other thing to do is keep reading this forum.  It's a slow process, you'll find some conflicting information occasionally   , but after a while you start to get a handle on what the different models sound like and (importantly) how they compare with each other.

I agree it's hard to tell much from clips, you can't really tell what a pickup does until you try it in your own guitar.  Once you actually buy a couple of sets it gives you a reference point for trying to work out what the other sets will sound like.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Well, I hear ya.  I had similar problems choosing since I had a lot of different tonal references, and it was hard to drill down to try and understand the key points of tone that my pickup choice would help me with.

Ultimately (as someone else ahs suggested), I emailed Tim with the most concise description of what I was looking for that I could manage, and he emailed back with his recommendation.  I went with it, and I'm pretty happy. :)  I haven't heard of anyone steered wrong by one of Tim's recommendations yet .....

(That said, the web site descriptions are still well overdue for an update!  I remember the BKP dudes saying that sessions to cut new official sample clips had been completed ages ago, and I remember the BKP dudes saying the new web site makeover was imminent -- also ages ago. ;) I guess they've been too busy winding pickups to do much web wrangling!)

Thats the problem man^^^ The tones they named the pups after are basically all my favorite tons
dio, thin lizzy, van halen, jimmy page all those guys. I guess that will help though.
I will leave it to Tim, and surfing the forum for a while. Thanks for your help guys, I will eventually figure it out.
