Start here:

that is insane..... theres too many bands.

a list of key bands would be good..... are there any?

That is the list! Start on A and go through to Z.

haha yeah, but i'm saying that would take forever, plus some of the bands wouldn't be professional/any good.

Yo

You should really check out Dokken the albums with George Lynch are all good, Whitesnake 1987 is a classic album no bad songs on that. Check out Pride by White Lion and Impellitteri the first album is good.

I think it's called Stand In Line.

some good suggestions posted already.

Danger Dangers debut is good (especially the tracks w/ Andy Timmons on)
I agree with George Lynch 80's era dokken too.
Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" is a must own.
Check out Winger's debut too. Reb Beach smokes on it!
Also Giant's "Last Of The Runaways" is a must.  AOR but Dann Huff's playing is SCARY!
Some good stuff came out in the early 90's too before ALL the  good rock bands got dropped for second rate grunge acts (IMO)

try these :

Crown Of Thorns  : S/T
Danger, Danger : (some great playing by Andy Timmons )
Lynch Mob : Wicked Sensation , S/T
Winger : In The Heart Of The Young and Pull
White Lion : Main Attraction
Tyketto : S/T
Damn Yankees : any
Slaughter : S/T and The Wild Life
Mr. Big of course
Tesla : Psychotic Supper, Bust a Nut , 5 Man Acoustical Jam ( for that unplugged feel)
oh yes check out Badlands too!!
far too widdly, that is

A few (well, a lot) more that spring to mind.  TO has covered the NWOBHM, so I'll cross the Atlantic in the other direction with some US and Canadian bands (plus a couple of Euro ones).  A few of these bands were probably early 90s rather than 80s, and some of them are not very heavy at all, but since the likes of Danger Danger have already been mentioned I'll go for it:

Y&T
Kick Axe
Fifth Angel
Crimson Glory
Blackfoot
Black 'N Blue
Cinderella
Coney Hatch
Aldo Nova
Lee Aaron
Helix
Headpins
Max Webster
Triumph
Night Ranger (first album is the best)
Streets (featuring Steve Walsh of Kansas)
Icon
Malice
Bonfire
Vandenberg
White Sister
Agent Steel
Metal Church
Rough Cutt
Ratt
Babylon AD
Steelheart
Riverdogs (featuring Viv Campbell on guitar)
Shadow King (also featuring Viv Campbell on guitar)
+1 to Giant
+1,000 to Badlands

Also in the very late 80s there were some great bands who weren't exactly metal but looked like they might be about to take hard rock music in some interesting new directions.  Unfortunately they got swept aside with the hair metal bands when grunge took over:

King's X
Warrior Soul
Saigon Kick
Galactic Cowboys
Living Colour
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I don't think there's a single band in that 80s thrash list that isnt worth a listen. Especially Dark Angel and Municipal Waste, they both kill.
If you like the 80's thrash, also try Morbid Saint, Onslaught, Re-Animator and Hirax.

As for the rockier side of things, you cant beat W.A.S.P. if you ask me. Classic stuff.

Haha, i'm surprised that someone else actually knows who Dark Angel are! You're the first person i've heard of who knows of them.

Damn right, Dark Angel are the shite. One of my favourite bands.

Some of you know Protein?
I'm not exactly sure they're pure 80er, but they did some definitly 80's rock (not exaclty 80's metal). I don't event know if they were a bit famous or if it was just a college band that put out a album, but the dude had a serious guitar tone and could play too (well everybody did back then  )
I started my own record label.
It's called Stand Out Records.
We ONLY use Bare Knuckle Pickups...
