Humbuckers for all mahogany Jackson

okay dokay folks....

what humbuckers for a neck-through, all-mahogany superstrat? jsut considering what i would go for if i were to remove the EMGs.

im going for a hard-rock tone... thats the only word i can think of to describe it...

only recognisable figure i can think of as an example tone-wise is Mark Tremonti... that kinda Alter Bridge hard-rock ish tone.... bordering on metal

i was thinking Nailbomb or Miracle Man in the bridge... with a cold sweat in the neck?

fairly typical choice....

which out of the Nailbomb/MM would be best for that kinda sound?

i definately dont want scooped tones... im not into much proper metal as such...

needs to be quite fat but very defined... a lot of riffing, but with a fair amount of powerchords too.

oh and cleans HAVE to be good. thats essential, they cant just be an after-thought type clean...

any info much appreciated as always guys.

sambo,

I recently ordered the nb/cs set for my jackson soloist.  Listen to the mm and nb sound clips and you'll get a good idea aabout the tonal difference.  I wanted a more organic sound which the nb gives.  It will also sound better clean vs. the ceramic mm according to what i have read.  I think nb would give you the hard rock tone you are after.  The mm is pretty much all out metal.

best way i can discribe the difference is the nailbomb sounds like satriani and the mm sounds like vai..

both are capable of most thing other than metal although the nailbomb is a bit sweeter in the uppermids.

james,

I have ordered the vh2/irish tours for my jackson bolt-on with floyd rose.

How do you like them, are they pretty versatile?

ahh cheers guys.

thats excellent.

nailbomb is what ive always craved, right from the very start.

but id be looking into the miracle man a lot recently.

any more clarification on the cleans though? they really are vital to my sound.

thanks again.

I've only got a NB bridge, so I can't really comment on cleans, but it goes alright with a bit of chorus

have you considered getting a more metal bridge pickup with a cleaner neck pickup, sam?

that is, if you mainly use bridge for distortion and mainly neck for cleans.

lol yer that is what i tend to do...

i rarely play any lead stuff band-wise.... messing about at home i do sometimes, but nothing substantial.

so mmm thats a good idea... hadnt really thought about it.

but are there any downsides to mixing too considerably different pickups?

obviously the middle position will be a bit buggered wont it???

what BKs actually give a nice clean tone anyway? i rarely hear ANYONE on hear talk about cleans as it happens....

cheers,

sam.

Neck Mule does some REALLY nice clean sounds if the amp is up to it. Tried to record through my Fender the other day but I cant get the mic position right to get its big warm tone :?

hmmm interesting... considering their all-round versatility as well, a mule could be a really good option.

so completely hypothetically then;

nailbomb bridge, mule neck...

practical?

I don't want to give any specific recommendations as I haven't tried enough, but yeah, if you mix and match too much, the middle position can suffer a little. But the bridge on its own, and neck on its own, should be fine.

Best to check with tim, though.

^ cheers for that guys...

VH11 one to remember then...

mules as well.

just come up with a slight change in my requirements lol...

its not that ive changed my mind as such... ive just got a better way of describing what sound im after, and im more certain about what sound i want now...

ok so.... the kinda sound im after is pretty much Bullets and Octane all over.... crunch is the main element... fairly high gain... but very crunchy.... hard to describe... but quite typical hard rock...

both their rhythm and lead sound is basically exactly what im after...

as for cleans... i dont have a clue of how to describe what i want.... just has to sound 'nice'

so... anyone have any ideas for this sort of sound?

its very typical-marshally type overdrive in a way.... but what pickup would put me in that ball park?

something sliiightly lower gain perhaps? Emerald, Mule? VHII?

i dont have a clue...

I think that kind of voicing would mostly come from your amp... you could ask for a voicing in the upper midrange to help push the crunch along, but the marshall kinda voice will come from what amp you are playing through
