What the hell should I buy?
« on: February 01, 2007, 10:35:48 PM »
You know what they say about the best laid plans?

My plan was that once I'd sold my ESP and Yam Drop 6, I'd get a PRS SE Custom with a trem bridge, into which I'd drop my Warpigs.

That plan went out the window earler today when I played one and found the trem arm was appalling. It was thin, cheap and nasty. It felt like it would snap if it gave it a quick Beck style whack to make it warble (which is something I do a lot). I know it's a small thing, but it has put me off the guitar, cos I don't want to c--k about changing the trem.

It's a real shame, cos the rest of the guitar was pretty good.

So my appeal for opinions is based around this question: What should I buy instead?

I'm open to ideas. The only critieria are:
1. Must have a trem bridge, but not a Floyd - I'm not extreme enough a trem player to warrant one.
2. Must have 2 humbuckers, or be possible to easily modify to take 2 humbuckers.
3. Nothing with a very flat fingerboard or very thin neck.

Budget is around £500, and of course 2nd hand stuff is very much an option.
Please hit me with suggestions guys. I'm sure there will be plenty of experienced people on here who will have some ideas I'll never have thought of.

Thanks for taking the time.

Ibanez SA2120FM theres one on ebay now. I think it'll go for a good price since people tend to look for RGs and Ss when they want an ibanez.

People will probably laugh at me (as I bought myself a non trem one a couple of weeks ago) but if you want a smaller bodied mahogany guitar with a trem how about something like this

Theyre pretty excelent guitars and available at decent prices (usually)

^ I'm not laughing man, that's a damn good suggestion. I'll have to take a closer look at these when I'm not so tired.

Could you PM me a bit of info about your Eggle, it'd be much appreciated?

Cheers,

Simon, I'm not trying to send you back to the PRS because your opinion is your opinion, but one thing that made a big difference for me:

I also thought the trem arm of my SE EG felt horribly thin (and I generally dislike trems anyway), but it's really no skinnier than a regular Fender one.  So, I simply put a Fender-style plastic cap on the end of the arm and - voila! - now the part of the bar I actually hold feels much more substantial.  The unit itself works very well and it never feels like the bar's in danger of bending or breaking.

(Can't argue with Rob's Eggle suggestion though!   )
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

+1 on eggles being excellent.

Also (bear in mind I have not tried these, they may be total cr@p) framus might be worth a look, they have quite a few models with wilky trems. Not sure if they have any twin-bucker ones, but they certainly have HSS ones.

I would get a used Music Man, either Axis Sport Trem or Silhouette.

But there are so many options ... what about a Parker?

They do lower level Parkers made in Korea.  I used to own a P-38 which was a very versatile guitar.  Great trem too - the Wilkinson.

Double Fat Strat or Big Apple Strat?

Don't know how easy a second-hand Big Apple would be to find, but they're good guitars.
Bare Knuckles owned: Mules, VHII, Rebel Yells, BKP-91, Strat 63 set, Riff Raffs.

Phwoar! Outrageously sexy!  8)

If you're not after a double-locking trem then that's cutting out a lot of the names I personally would've mentioned... but I'd say MusicMan also.

What about a HH Strat?

Wow, thanks for all the responses guys. I've now got a load of research to do, which oddly I really enjoy!

Like the idea of an Eggle, especially if one comes up cheap once I have the cash, likewise a second hand Music Man. I'm also going to have a look at HH Fender Strats.

I think I'll leave the Parkers for now. I'm still trying to get used to the way they look after the best part of 15 years!

Err heres the one I bought, I will do some proper pics at the weekend as these the store sent me.

(along with 57 pics of their other eggles)

I'm considering the idea of installing a set of mules (or rebel yells), but as I bought an amp today that will have to wait now (well for a couple of weeks anyway)
