On Gibsons I have gone down the Snowy White/Gary Moore Route of D'addario 10-52 and on Fenders 10-46. I use a 1.21 mm BKP plectrum when using 10s and like yourself a 0.71/0.74 pick when experimenting with 9s . When I was last gigging, I sometimes used a 0.74 pick with 10-52s, to make the sound brighter and cut through the mix better.
I still use a fairly light touch, but tend to pick every note if possible using alternate picking etc.
I was very pleasantly surprised to hear that you were able to get the desired effect using much more 'user friendly' materials. It has inspired me to experiment more.
