i think for metal rythem tone there is nothing the beats the emg 81 at all. however for leads and cleans they arnt as good as passive pickups however using my maxon od9 pedal i can get a really kick ass sounding lead tone and it doesnt sound sterile like most people say or have ice pick highs! and the whole thing about emgs sound the same in all guitars is a load of bull lol as i have owned guitars with different woods and the emgs sounded totally different. i even had two mahogony guitars and one was set neck and other neck thru and they sounded completely different. but anyway for rythem emgs rule!

Cheers Tim, good post. I like the compressed growl from the EMG's that I have too.  I need a BKP to compare though. I need a job :( [/depressed]

Do you not own any BKs?

It is true that EMGs sound different in different guitars. But after having had EMGs in several guitars and BKs in the same guitars I can tell you that BKs allow far more of the guitars sound through.

EMGs always have an instantly identifiable character that is dominant, and the sound of the guitar is secondary. I know EMGs sound different in different guitars, but I can spot EMGs anywhere, provided its a high-gain sound. It just leaps out. I for one cant do that with any other pickup. You can see that as a detraction from them in that they do suppress the sound of a guitar to a greater degree than other pickups, or as a strength, in that they have their own sound that a lot of people love, including me.
