Owning more than one guitar...

As I'm not really playing that often I'm finding that I'm really only playing one of my collection of guitars. I feel like it's a bit of a waist of time having the others and considering selling. Are there others in this situation? Will I regret it?

Heres what I'm considering selling:

2004 USA Fender Stratocaster
Black, with black pickguard (think The Edge)
Loaded with 3 Bare Knuckle Pickup Apaches
Maple Fretboard/Neck
Callaham Tremolo Block fitted
SKB Hard Case

How much do you think it's worth? Do you think I'll regret selling it?

Personally I only have two guitars fully assembled and it doesn't feel like nearly enough. One in E and one in drop B, I 'need' at least a full Eb and a full D. Then I need a hollowbody in standard and a hollowbody in C for playing kyuss, and a strat, and a tele, and I could do with a few acoustics, something with P-90s, a seven string hardtail and a seven string floyd, and that's before I even think about buying guitars to facilitate having the whole range of BKPs installed...

Each to his own, I guess, but I have no intention of being content with less than 10.

and if you will regret it is really up to you...... depends on how much you love the guitar - looks, sound, or something else maybe like it's history or something. if it has none of those, i doubt you will regret it. if it has a memorable sound, then don't sell it.

As someone with about 60 guitars you would think that I am not the right person to answer this, but when I was younger and needed to sell guitars if I wanted a change, I have sold several guitars that I later regreted selling.  These include a 1970 LP Custom that was all mahogany and was lonly about 8lbs, 61 Les Paul/SG Junior - original white, 62 original white SG junior (this was a case of really never learning!), 1972 55-LP Special reissue, the first in the UK, I traded it for the Custom, 1962 P-Bass, original Eccleshall 3/4 solid 335 (SN was about 2!!), Fender all blonde Tremolux with matching 2x12 Bassman cab, lots of AC30's, Plexi 50's and a Marshall 8x10 cab.

If anyone recognises any of them let me know!!!!

The bottom line answer is did you write anything on it and will you be able to get that sound from something else and also do you need the money?

Well it was my only guitar for 2 years, which did involve recordings and many live performances, but it's one of a few guitars that's just not getting played anymore. Anyway, I may keep it - I'm a bit strapped for cash but I'm curious to know how much people think it's worth. It's totally spotless, looks the dogs bollox and I always had comments on how good it sounds.

IMO "I don't play it much" isn't a good enough reason to sell a guitar.  I have a fair number of guitars too (though not quite in Philking's league :)) - if I sold one every time I realised I'd not played it for 6 months, I'd hardly have any left - guitars go in & out of favour, if you liked it once, you may well come back to it.

More to the point, you may be going through a phase where you're not playing as much & music isn't quite so important to you.  But in a few months or years it might be the most important thing in your life.

Also, unless you're lucky enough to have a guitar that's vintage/rare or in fashion right now (or happened to get a very good bargain) then you will most likely not get what you paid for it - customisation (even BKPs) rarely adds to the value.

I totally agree with Antag.  That's how I see my guitar collection and why I struggle to sell any.  I have a '91 USA Fender Strat that's been out of the case no more than 10 times in the last 10 years.  I've tried to sell it a couple of times but bottled it and pulled out of the sale.  I'm just too attached to it for some reason!

Antag's theory works well with pedals too.  I've recently re-discovered my Marshall Drive Master after not using it for over 10 years - it sounds great for 'DC stuff at low volume.  It's amazing how your needs change over time and gear you've acquired suddenly becomes really useful again!

Well, yes, I think you'll regret it, though it may take a while.
16 years ago I bought my first guitar. A Japanese Strat (2nd hand), but I think my life went kind of pear shaped and four years later I lent it to a friend of a friend. (I think I was rather drunk at the time.)
It took me a while to realise what I'd done (about 10 years or so) and a further two years of regret before I did anything about it, and bought another 'first' guitar because I really didn't think I'd ever get it back.
I did. The guy hadn't been too careful with it, and I'm looking to get it done up...
Anyway, the point is, while I try to play both of them (plus my other two) regularly, I don't think 'I don't play it much' is a good reason to sell something. You'll probably buy another one just like it... at some point.

I have some sympathy with both sides of the argument.  

I have far too many guitars and should probably sell at least half of them, but whenever I try to list out the ones I "need" I think well, I'm not selling any SGs, and it's nice to have a solid Tele and a Thinline, and two Strats with different pickups could be useful....  lo and behold, it turns out that nearly all of them are "essential" (even though I've never, ever  played a guitar outside my own house).  :roll:

On the other hand, I've sold at least 30 guitars over the years, and only regret selling 2 or maybe 3 of them.  It's quite liberating to get shot of one, and you feel less guilty about buying the next one!

I had that too, and not even with expensive stuff!
A few years after I sold my les paul studio I regret it, but back than I was happy I got rid of the damn thing, go figure..
I regret selling a 1983 fender strat that was all pimped up with floyd rose, high output pickups, extra switching stuff, etc.

I had it with some pink analog Ibanez delay, which I sold when I went 19", but I would love to have it again now, was nice stuff for freaky sounds.
