Anyone got the original Holy Diver?
« on: February 16, 2007, 01:08:50 PM »
Has anyone got the original Holy Diver with ceramic magnet and the dc around 13k?
I'm thinking about having a calibrated set made to the old specs as i'm more of a fan of ceramic magnets at the bridge.

Does anyone know how it compares to the newer version?

Edited for awful typing.

I'm talking to a guy at Stringmasters and he says Tim will make me them for their price :P Only a couple of quid cheaper but it all adds up in the end

Hi

I had them and I really didn't like em to be honest, sounded way harsh to my ears I then went to Nailbombs which were better but darker. I now got Rebel Yells which I love.

A word of caution Joe - although I don't have an original one, my understanding is that the HD was completely redesigned to be the pickup it is today.  The current one that I've raved about at length on this forum has a totally different sound to the original....

antag-question about hD-looking for set fot LP CUSTOM-between hd or mm in bridge-i want to know if the hd can reproduce pinch harm on the low e string at the 2nd/3rd fret-i figure the mm can-it is hit /miss with my rebel yells -i want to make this paul a metal monster-one that can really SQUAWWWK on the low e/low a...sort of like by viv  c in "Rainbow in the Dark" in the main rhythm figure-I always loved how he gets them so quick and easily-i figure the cold sweat as well, but I am wary of ceramics(cs and MM)
thanks

FWIW, there are a few pinches on D & A strings in this abortive attempt at rock  at the bottom of Joe's thread in the Player's forum.

IMO, the HD won't hinder you or make you work harder for your pinches.  Of course you still have to hit them right - miracles won't happen (no pun intended :))

However, bear in mind that I used a very bright sounding Jackson to do this.  In my HD Les Paul, they still jump out of the guitar & are as easy to get, but sound a little more "rounded" - i.e they "sing" rather than "scream".  I wonder whether Miracle Man might be a better bet in a Les Paul...

I have one of the old sets

Not sure how they compare to the newer ones though. But because of the ceramic magnet, i'm guessing the sound will be a little bit tighter (which mine are pretty tight).

Yeah that's kind of why i want ceramic at the bridge, i like a more tight sound but i don't want it to be as tight as the Miracle Man and stuff. I still want an 80's sound so i think this is the right decision.

Deffinatly can't go wrong with the Holy Divers then Joe. They have that cool 80's tone to them (which is why i bought them in the first place) but they can do the modern stuff pretty well too, so they're pretty versatile.

I noticed the other day that the page of HSS sets, where it lists Holy Divers as an H, still lists the stats for the original ceramic Holy Divers.
