For those with an open mind within metal
« on: February 20, 2007, 10:16:22 PM »
ok, so, today i thought i would go band hunting..... looking for bands that are well or not well known, that i think are good.
and i stumbled upon Sunn O))).
holy shite. it's absolutely weird! completely different!!!! but i suppose thats why i love it.
it's full on drone metal..... i just love their bass response!!!!
here's a link, which is part of a huge long song, that spans over 6 videos of this length, all found on Sunn O))) and Boris's website:
http://liveeyetv.org/playmovie_big.php?mov=sunn/sunn3_bb
have fun, but be patient while listening. this is the third video out of 3, and the first where we get some horrific howling vocals
i love it. i bet you will hate it, but most people do.

enjoy!

I tried listening to it starting from 1 and still cant get into it. I swear it was just 1 chord continuously let to ring out with a few extras every so often?!

I'd heard of this band before, people seemed to like them on other forums so I watched a few videos on youtube and just thought "...um... ok.. ?!"

hmmm yeah, it is that, but within that lies the power. it's better if you watch them while they do it, it seems very masterful and they hit those chords with menacing grace  :D
i like the general power and downtunedness of it.... its eeeeeevil.... it's like black metal just slowed down 10x.

omg omg omg awesome in number 4 they bring in a gong!!!!!!! YEAH!!!
and it has some cool ass evil chord progressions in that one!
EDIT: also in number 4, he hits his guitar on top of his amps to create a huge chord, then puts his guitar on the floor without unplugging it while it feeds back. now thats skill. he doesn't hit it like Rock Legends do though, he did it majestically.... which was weird, but cool  :D

Never heard of Jesu before, but they sound much better than Sunn O))) as theres an actual melody in there rather than just sustained chords.. imho obviously.

Good old doom bands, The Guys or atleast 1 or 2 of the guys from Sun O))) Are from Khanate.
Personally my self i preffer Skepticism to Khanate and Sun O))), they're more of what i call beautiful doom.

Some other doom bands i like are Forest of Shadows and Empyrium, might be worth checking out if your looking for new bands.

The idea of SunnO))) is that they're drone doom- you try and zone out while listening to them and almost go into a trance that only ends when you realise that the song has finished.  If you listen to it searching for progression of melodies and stuff you'll be disappointed. ^_^

Am I just getting old? I just didn't get it at all. What is there to like? The guitar playing is sub grade 1 level, the bass response is flabby and weak (kindof what you'd expect from a Gibson in G#), there's no coherent song structure, no rhythm, no melody, no real texture, it's just 2 guys playing childishly simple riffs (badly) and some guy screaming (badly).
It doesn't even work as a drone as it's too slow, non-rhythmic and they're off time.

it's the hypnotic athmosphere
definately not the casual listening, you gotta be in a mood for it
