Hello all pickup question
« on: February 21, 2007, 04:44:56 PM »
Hello all im new here and was wondering what pickup you all think is best for my musical preference.  Im looking for a pickup that is good for rock/southern rock as well as a bit of metal that is not all blending into mush like mu emg's are.  I would like a nice clean sound as well but with a little gain good for rock and metal, any suggestions.  Guitar is EPI LP and 50watt line six amp, thanks all.

Well.. the Mississippi Queen's one option if you like P90s, not sure what kind of humbuckers though...

Wow, I have no idea what would work for that. Are you doing a Pride & Glory type of thing?

They might. That was going to be my knee-jerk response, but I'm curious as to whether the thread starter is going to be doing Southern AND metal, or Southern Metal. That would change things.

If it's Southern and metal together, it would me more like Pride & Glory. There are lots of great southern rock bands: Skynrd ... .38 Special ... CSNY ... Blackfoot, etc

Sorry guys i meant music like zakk's pride and glory with maybe a little metal thrown in, not death/thrash or anything, more like some Black Label stuff, any ideas as to what would be well suited for that kind of music, thanks.

Wow just heard a clip of the Rebel Yell Humbuckers and it sounded nice, are those for sale yet?  Any info on these.

Mules would be my first choise for a southern rock LP. For heavier stuff you will need to dig hard into the strings.

The Rebel Yell would be great too, they'll handle the heavier stuff better than the Mules.

You could also go for a Crawlers. They're like hot rodded Mules but they have a very specific type of tone with a big midrange hump, not everyman's pickup.

Screw the numbers, if it sounds right then it's a good choice.

Crawlers - I have 'em in my Les Paul and they have that PAF tonality but just hotter and able to handle gain better than accurate PAF repros.

will vouch for the rebels-i play a ton of allman bros stuff and the rebs do it-they brightened my les paul standard up-i played a seymour dun pearly gates for years, which would be like a Mule/Black dog style pup-i got the reb because I wanted a little more bite and articulation with my lead work-i felt the pg wasn't responding, or tracking quick enough...wanted more note articulation, if that makes sense-the reb was EXactly what I had in mind-seems like black dog/mule/emerald/abraxas would all work as well-the resistance on the reb seems to be around 14.5-great harmonics--awesome with neck and bridge-put it this way..if I want skynyrd..i get it...if I want sabbath...i get it
...get it??!!get any of them..you will dig..my brotha!!
