Can't honestly say how disappointing this gig was.

For a start, totally oversold. I realise it was moved to a smaller venue at the last minute, but there are limits to what the place can hold. I didn't pay the guts of twenty quid to stand in the hall. i can do that at home.

Secondly, too many half-wits in the crowd. A bunch of dirty feckers puking and pissing around them in the pit. Not a good atmosphere.

Thirdly, Borderline awful sound. it was quite hard to tell if the sound in the Toilets was very good, or the sound everywhere else was awful. Certainly, there was no marked improvement in sound no matter where in the building you tried to go. Very odd, because this (the spring and Airbrake) is a venue known for having great sound. I know when I saw Rodrigo y Gabriella and The Supersuckers there, the sound was pinpoint, to say nothing of the countless local acts I've saw there. Maybe the regular soundman was ill

Also, small points which others may not have found as annoying as me. Having to get an armband to buy drink (it was an all ages show) in a club attached to what's pretty much my local wasn't appreciated at all by most of my crowd. The total blanket ban on smoking that was only announced on the door was also unwelcome.

To sum up then, Mastodon actually played fabulously well, but the gig suffered from piss-poor managment, bad sound, naked greed on the part of the promoters and an audience of oversouped teenage monkeys that should have been at home with their mothers (no offence to teenagers here present. I'm sure none of you guys would puke your Smirnoff ice over a moshpit). I'd go see mastodon again, but it'll be a long time before I go to a gig in the Spring and Airbrake again.

what a bad way to stereotype us teenagers. but yeah, it's true though.

i'm proud to say i've never thrown up at a gig....... i barely eat enough to do so; i always forget to eat in the excitement  :)
except once where i ate a load of Boost bars before an Opeth gig. i was frightfully hyper.

You can't expect the sound to be as good as Rodrigo y Gabriella. They are a two piece acoustic outfit. When Mastodon are a 4 piece metal band. And dirty metal at that. Their tone is dirty enough as it is! Let alone being played through a shite PA.

They're one of the very few "new" bands I actually like.

Although.... is it bad for their credibility if they appeal to old geezers like me?   :?

It's not like we haven't earned (although not necessarily justified) every single stereotype and putdown ever lumped on us.
To be honest, Adults complaining about stupid teens is much less irritating (and far better justified) than 10 year olds going on about how great their life will suddenly become when they hit puberty.

I like Mastodon. They do have something different about their music. My son got that riff from "Colony Of Birchmen "  good. I do like their voices ,rhythm section is great. Sure I would like to see them in concert  :)

Love it, better than Leviathan.

The vocals are just tuneful enough for me (never getting into that death metal territory I can't stand).  Must admit I have trouble remembering the vocal melodies, but I love the overall sound, especially the intricate little guitar parts.  And their sound is quite unique, but every now and then there are little bits that remind me of Rush... and that's good.

I did not mean to smite all teenagers with my shitetystick of justice. Most youngsters, even those who take a drink (feck it, especially those who take a drink. I used to be one) are sound as a pound. I spent some of the best nights craic I've had in years with two young cubs from Andytown who were only about 16-17 at the time (that's not as dodgy as it sounds, I swear)

<rant>
This was more the "My da's rich and I like metal solely to piss him off" kind of muppet. If you're at a metal gig and aren't drinking pints, beer or shorts, slopping down sugary cr@p and making a mess of the place and a total holy show of yourself, you're wasting a ticket. You're just like a dub at the all Ireland final. Taking a ticket from the truly passionate.

And you should go away off and iron your scrote, as podge and rodge would no doubt put it.
