My day with TIM MILLS ...
« on: March 05, 2007, 03:08:32 AM »
Well, Tim should be (hopefully) winging his way back to England at this point in time.

Thanks to a long layover @ Newark airport, Tim was able to spend the day with Phil King and m'self.

I took NYC transit out to Hoboken where I met up with Phil, and then we drove up to Newark to pick up Tim. What followed was about 7 hrs, all of them very enjoyable, that was by turns inspiring & entertaining.

Thanx to Phil for driving and supplying his most excellent home/guitar laboratory. Tim sat perched in Phil's living room for most of the day just shredding away on various guitars, relaxing and swapping stories.

A few things of note:

- Tim is a scary guitar player. He can play everything from Yngwie to Jimmy Page and all points between with aplomb.

- Tim is totally passionate about music, guitar playing, and Bare Knuckle pickups.

- Tim is a font of knowledge regarding all kinds of aspects of playing guitar, gigging, running a business, etc ... and he's not stingy with his knowledge!

By the time we dropped Tim off at the terminal, I felt like I had been in a master class all day; it was definitely a learning experience for me. I was so pleased to see that, tonally, my taste is not that far off from Tim's.

Phil can tell you all the guitars & amps that were played; I lost track. All I know for sure was that we played through my live rig for a fair amount of time. (Splawn Quick Rod/Hiwatt 4x12)

I can't begin to get into all the subjects we discussed (from crazy gig stories to the Green Man; the nature of good pizza to getting a good guitar tone for solos)

So: Thanx again to Phil for being the coolest host this side of the Rio Grande, and to Tim for being a good friend, great guitarist, and inspiring figure!

So whos who then?

I know that's TO in the Newcastle shirt (Geordies pop up everywhere), you can always spot them as they only wear Newcastle shirts.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

)It was a great day.  Just to reiterate what TO said, Tim is an incredible player. I will now try to list the equipment we used:

Guitars
Tim's Terry Morgan 1959 Les Paul Clone - with Mules - just an incredible guitar
1953 Les Paul conversion to 58 specs, with Black Dogs
1967 335 with unpotted Stormy Mondays
1964 Firebird III - all original
Nash 1957 aged Strat with Van Zandt pickups
1957 Strat with Apaches (sounded so much better than the Nash  8) )
Bacchus Zemaitis with Emerald/Mule combo
Super Strat with Holy Diver/2xTrilogy Suites
1990 PRS Standard with Rebel Yells
1957 Tele with Brown Sugar/Slowhand
Ibenot - Ibanez body/Warmoth neck Nailbomb/Slowhand/Cold Sweat
1971 John Birch J1 - original John Birch Pickups

Tim also did a quick rendering of Ace or Spades on my Rickenbacker bass which I was just setting up!!

For amps we used:

Mini-Mat with Matamp 1x12 with heritage G12M
Splawn Quick Rod with Hiwatt 4x12 (Fanes) or Ear Candy 1x12 (Celestion Sidewinder)
McIntyre Bluesmaker 20w with Avatar 2x12 with Eminence Tonespotters or Ear Candy 1x12

Effects (used very sparingly)
Klon Centaur
ArielFX Wah

Tim played everything equally jaw dropping.  It didn't matter if it was the Firebird with old Gibson mini humbuckers or the super strat with the HD/TS set.  The John Birch was brought out for 2 reasons, one was because I thought Tim would like it (it is a phenomenal sound - just totally early 70's heavy rock but with clarity on all notes), and secondly to try to persuade him to build a pickup with that sound!!!

The time passed really quickly, it was great to see Tim again and I'm looking forwards to seeing everyone at LGS in a couple of months.
So many pickups, so little time

Just for the record, I want to reiterate that if BKP ever do more with bass pickups, and they do some tasty Ric replacements, I'll get some for my '76 4001 in a heartbeat! :)

(Meanwhile, 'cause they don't, I'm thinking of swapping the resin-potted Bartolini in my 4001's bridge for a stock Rick HB1.  I dig the 'bucker thing even in my Ric. :)  And if I felt super keen, I could ask BKP to rewind the HB1!)

Mmmmm! 8) Do you have more "tasting notes" on the Birch pups?

My Ric is a checkerboard 72, and has been modified a lot over the years (i bought it with no pickups).  It has a schaller bridge (there is a maple block inlaid where the Ric bridge was), a Basslines Musicman bridge and a toaster top Ric neck.  It also has active tones from an old RC Greco circuit.  It lost the lacquer on the fingerboard years ago when I had it refretted.  I asked them to clean off the fingerboard as I prefer thar feel.

I have just ordered a Jazz set for a 62 Stack pot that I an having built by john Elliott at Bravewood guitars.  My P-bass set is amazing, so I am sure that the Jazz will be equally awesome!

I think Tim said that the single will be released in June, and it will have 3 songs. I forget the names of the songs, though. PDT_008

Awsome stuff, interestingly enough i was discussing Tims unreal guitar abilities to some of the guys at Mansons as they had never heard clips of him playing.

Really looking forward to the new Iced Earth stuff, does anyone know if Tim will be doing any solos?
