Hey guys i have been offered another swap deal for my Laney LC50. (I never had the dough in time to get the Engl : (

Anyways the deal is this, 40 watt 1 yr old Hot Rod De Ville 4 x 10 for £400 (to buy outright).

Whats the general consensus for this amp. Im not gonna be playing metal on the thing but how much gain on the amp is there and is it enough to get a modern rock rhythm sound outta it. I normally use a Monte Allums DS-1 in front of my amp anyway but if i can get all my gain outta the amp then that would suit me better.

I have the Hot Rod deluxe which is the 1x12 40w version.. its only really good for cleans in my opinion. I dont like the overdrive channels at all, very bland. Then again if youre using a DS1 in front then it should be ok for rock.

Oh and the 1x12 is bloody heavy, cant imagine moving the 4x10 would be much fun.

I wouldn't say any Hot Rod series Fender would be good for metal, its a souped up Blackface circuit (I think) so Indie OD is where you end. I love Fender amps, but i'd stick with the Laney for your purposes.

The downsides:

The 4X10 is heavy.
The overdrive channel isn't the best, although, with the right setup, it can give you a creamy bluesy lead tone.
The volume is tricky, it goes from 'not loud enough' to 'loud' to 'too loud'.

The good things:

It's loud enough for medium sized venues.
It works great with pedals. Depending on the pedal it can go from classic to modern hi gain.
It's very, very reliable.
Good clean bassman-like tone (not too clean).
Excellent reverb
Two speaker outputs so you can add a cab.

Tom's right about the od on the hot rod series but the clean chanel is not only good for cleans - wind it up to 7 - 8 and you'll get a great overdrive sound. The only problem with this is you'll probably need an attenuator.

As far as pedals go I use a box of rock in front of mine and that works a treat as a slolo boost as well as an extra bit of distortion when I need it.

I'm very happy with my amp but whether or not this is what you want I don't know. I have no experience of the laney but if it's more high gain than the fender it's probably more suitable for your needs.

Better to get a Deluxe Reverb and just run pedals through it.

The Hot Rod ain't a bad amp, but it just doesn't suit what I mainly play.

Hi,

Just a swift comment. I once owned a De Ville, 4 * 10" speakers, very heavy with a silly handle on top... guaranteed to induce a hernia if you're needing to shift it often but... put it in one good place... plug in a Fender Strat [a quality one with vintage style pickups] and you have the richest luscious sound of rock n roll. It's warm, full and a wonderful sound if you like real electric guitar sounds at their best. The 10" speakers do a great job on bringing out a Strats sounds.
