2 (already known, lol) tricks that change your sound a lot
« on: March 07, 2007, 10:51:00 PM »
so, over the last 2 days, i found 2 tricks which are already widely used of course (so i haven't invented anything   )

1: yesterday, i put my amp on a chair. Made a HELL of a lot of difference to the bass response..... no longer flappy, incredibly tight.

2: today, after my return to standard tuning yesterday (after a looong time with drop D/C) i downtuned my Les Paul from D standard to C# standard..... Bingo! an instantly richer, warmer sound. i mean, twice as rich. it was awesome, plus, i could whack out some sabbath riffs while i was there  . i wil use this as my main tuning from now on.

so the point of this post was to just emphasize the huge difference small things like this can make to your sound, and instantly solve your problems and make you a lot happier. i know i am.

good night

I agree with No. 1, not necessarily with No. 2.

Keep experiementing! There are hosts of things you can do to improve your tone, once you've got the major stuff sorted out.

number 2 is just down to preference really, and the certain guitar in question. the unwound strings on my LP sounded the same, but the wound ones sounded a bit more rich and full....... at least to me  :)  plus it made my heavy riffs heavier    it's going to be my standard tuning from now on. any lower and it will be silly. (although Amon Amarth tune to B standard non-baritone!!!)

i will keep experimenting, but first i need to get the Valveking. it will transform my tone.

If you have an openback combo or cab, putting it near a wall would reflect back some bass. Tadaaaa instant bass boost
