Amp recording?
« on: March 07, 2007, 11:05:43 PM »
I just got myself a stand for my microphone so I can position it virtually however I want. I used to try to stuck it through a handing in my folding stool... It was ridiculous.

Anyway, now that I can do things properly, and that I got an external sound card in which I can plug directly the pup, what are the tricks to get the best of your amp sound?

The amp is a Laney LC15R loaded with a 10" speaker.

I made a quick try this afternoon with the mic in front of the speaker, very close, oriented @ 45 degree to the grill. Sounded ok, but are there position that gives really better result than others?

Im interested in this too. Im thinking of getting an SM57 for recording my amp.

What mic do you use? Im sure the directional response will have something to do with where to place it etc.

There are so many variables:

Distance from speaker
Orientation with respect to speaker
part of speaker its closest to.

make the simple, obvious ones.

The closer, more central and more directly facing the position the more direct, heavy and aggressive the sound.

Really the best way is to keep simple rules like that in mind and just move the mic about until you get the sound you want. DOnt forget that you can record sounds in sections, too: if you find one place that gives you a low end you like and one that gives you a high end you like you can see if double tracking from both is any good.

Then theres the games you can play with another mic, like spaced pair adn what have you. Lots of fun!

I am using a Audio-lapas Uni-directional dynamic microphone DM-1200A. I bought this mic approximately 10 years ago, when I recorded a Radiohead cover of Karma police with 2 friends (another guitarist and a singer). I remember the mess it was to get the amps and the singer @ the right distance from the mic so that we could here everything at about the same level. Great fun though. We spent a complete afternoon on this song.

So it seems like it is gonna be experimentation time.
