Hey
Well, i'm a bit of a gain-freak by nature and am looking into my first set of BKPs. I am not going through with my Pig-90'bucker concept as it means unnecessary routing of an irreplaceable guitar (only two were made of this one).
I'm thinking that the CWPs might be what I'm looking for as their inherent darkness would work well with the materials (Alder body, maple fretboard) yet still have the tightness coming from the ceramic magnet. For the neck I want a smooth rounded tone like Steve Vai etc. would the neck warpig match up for this task.
I'm thinking of having the ability to coil-tap to get better clean sounds whilst retaining the humbucking qualities.
Essentially I want a good pickup for shred and rhythm playing and i want it to be high output because I also want to have a go at Stanley Jordan style runs (he probably doesn't have higher output Pups but he has them very close to the strings and has his guitars set up specifically for touch style playing).
However, I am interested in the idea of unpotted Pups and Tim says that only the vintage output Pups can be unpotted.
My amp setup is an Indie IT-70 and I use a danelectro wasabi rock-a-bye pedal to give it a gain boost on the drive channel, but this is very noisy and I would like to stop using it and get my drive purely from the amp (The pedal gives it a pleasant sound with nicer harmonics as it really saturates it, making it sound more like a real valve amplifier.
I am thinking of leaving this as a bedroom amplifier and buying a peavey valve king head for ease of transport.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

The reason behind me saying unpotted is only for vintage humbuckers is simply down to application.
Unpotted coils are basically microphonic-tonally they're right on the edge of break up as any air trapped between the windings is free to resonate sympathetically. Potting fills in these voids and allows the use of higher gain. Hence why I steer clear of unpotted coils for medium to hi output humbuckers-in fact we double pot some!

I can't really say, the only BK humbucker I own is the nailbomb, but I tend to recommend it for everything...

CWPs arent dark.

They're HEAVY

Theres a world of difference.

They will cut like a knife and crush like a wrecking ball in alder and maple.

I do think they're a little excessive for the bands you mention, though. Nailbomb or MM would easily give you enough gain for that stuff, if your amp can supply the goods.

The distortion on the amp is a bit wussy and by dark I meant comparatively to the Miracle Man. So I think I might need the extra push from the warpigs and the slightly reduced brightness would work well with the maple fretboard.
And besides, I'm after a tone which is as good as the bands I mentioned not identical as I want to have a more unique tone as opposed to replicating someone else's. And besides the stuff I write is VERY gainy and is not designed to replicate those bands they are just influences I have encountered in my playing.
I'm after Pups which will be suitable for that style of playing not those tones.

The style is in your hands my friend.

Get a WP set with CWP in the bridge. Thats the most powerfull set BK do and it sounds like thats what you want.

I've been wondering how your custom 22k Miracle Man compares to the CWP.  Can you describe the differences?

The first thing I'll do when I get a good recorded sound is some comparisons. That'll be top of the list.

It wont be soon, but its on its way!

In the mean time:

Please remember that this is as they sound in the guitars: the CWP is in a swamp ash body mahog/mapl/walnut neck, ebony FB with 6 screw bolt on, the Monster Miracle Man is in alder/maple/rosewood, FR, bolt on.

Gain level: about the same.
Compression: about the same.

EQing: both have quite the tonne of lows (CWP guitar has a fair bit more, but a lot of that is to do with the guitar, which is bassier acoustically) and smooth mids. The CWP is middier (guitars are quite even in the mids) and the MMM has much more highs (so does the MMMs guitar, but I think they add)

Both are articulate as shakespere and tight as a gnats chuff. The MMM is a bit tighter though.

I've had a WP and a MM - sounds like the 22k MM could be fun but I think the standard alnico WP will be more my style.  I only ever sold the alnico WP as I wasn't playing in a metal band anymore and my 'main guitar' gets changed around depending on what type of band I'm in (had dozens of pickup changes over the years, heh).

I'm using a Crawler in my main guitar at the minute - it's a '91 LP std.

Hey Maverick, any chance of clips after you get your p/ups? Looking at your influences (and your technique stats on that other topic, lol) they'd be pretty damn good... no pressure :) !

Yeah but the sound would be cr@p because I can only record at school and I can only use the amps there as mine is heavy. Although if I could get hold of a condenser and a stand I might be able to do some recordings in cool edit or audacity...
