Me trying to be Schenker (Mule clip) UPDATED!
« on: March 12, 2007, 12:39:01 PM »
Finally got round to learning this song, I think one of the chords at the end is wrong but I'm too lazy to go back and edit it  Also, the solo isnt perfect, only really learnt it last night and my vibrato is sometimes a bit off I guess:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=493678&songID=5105581

Setup is the same as always now - Epi LP Custom (bridge mule) into Laney GH50L, I used my rat to boost for the solo. Mic'd on a G12H with an SM57 straight into the soundcard.

Thanks for looking :)

edit - updated it with a better tone - pointed the mic more toward the centre of the speaker and double tracked it all. Same link as above :)

Thanks :) I've decided I'm gonna re-record tomorrow, when I have the house to myself so I can have the amp a bit louder, and not have to sit uncomfortably close to the computer with headphones for the backing track

You might wanna try double tracking some bits to make em stand out a bit more, too.

Cool, I'll give it a go. Should make the rhythm tone a bit fatter I assume?

I think it sounded plenty fat. When you're using one mic you have to be careful that you don't end up cutting the mids out by placing the mic in such a way as to get more low end. Typically, I would use two SM57s for this: One right on access with the cone, and one out on the cone edge, then blend them together when mixing.

Ah, thats probably why it always sounds more scooped than it does in the room - I have the mic pointed a bit to the side of the cone because it seems to sound bassier, but thats obviously scooping the tone a bit? You can tell I'm a total noob at this

They do indeed! Thanks for listening, I updated it now and the tone is much fuller to my ears (probably due to the double tracking), I also played the solo better :)

Sounds better. Solo sounds more committed. Excellent bending, too.

Thanks again guys! The solo probably sounds more committed because I was standing up to play, I've realised when I sit down and play it sounds lazier for some reason  Weird I know. Ben, do you have any tips for getting a tighter/less fuzzy rhythm tone with 1 mic? Probably best to PM me to save cluttering the thread if you have time to help :)

Though Dave, UFO only "cool" ?! They're awesome! :P

Sounds great Tom! Awesome definition and string separation on the rhythm parts and a great lead tone. Also really liked the playing, great feel and attitude and sounds !
