Replacing EMG 81s

man, you're really confused

Dimebag used Bill Lawrence L500XL (very scooped, thin, but nice sounding and suprisingly heavy pickup), BUT he used an EQ cranking the mids right before the amp, exactly like Van Halen and Randy Rhoads (nnnnoooooooise)

i think warpig won't give this sharp sound you're looking for
i'd go with Miracle Man set or a Painkiller set
maybe an overwound alnico Miracle Man in the bridge will sound more modern and full like an emg 85, but not so nasally as a Warpig
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Firstly, been talking about this for a while, and although I love my EMGs, I want camo covers. And yes I know that's pathetic. And I know it's simply aesthetic. But even the greatest of men can indulge!

The tone would improve aswell I hope, since although I love my EMGs, they have a very weird sound... Not muddy... Very clear... But not at all clear.

It's like they're making TV static sound, but it's very CLEAR static!

Anyone know what I mean? It's very weird methinks :p

Anyway, basically, I'm into a modern metal, and my fave band by quite a distance - In Flames, and yes I do know they play Gibsons with EMG 81s, while I have an SG shape with an EMG 81 in it :p

Basically I want a very high output pickup, with tight bass but not stupidly trebbly, I don't wanna sound like EVH, and I don't want mids turned to 11 like Dimebag.

I love chugging, it's part of what I do just like all metal fans, and I like to shred (when the gain's high enough), the stuff I play is mostly melodic riffs like In Flames stuff, with some chug chug Rhythm.

I was thinking the Nailbomb or the Warpig, but I heard the Warpig was a very bassy pickup, for more like Lamb of God / Slayer, while the Nailbomb is a more Sikth/In Flames style pup?

Or maybe even a warpig at the neck and a Nailbomb in the Bridge? Meaning I can get chug chug at neck and Melodic riffs and my solos at the Bridge?

Has anyone tried a Warpig/Nailbomb combination? Or am I just being stupid?

Tone I'm going for:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zu3DvBaDAY8

Guitar it's going into is an ESP Viper - Full mahogany, tuned to standard.

Last thing: I know switching from EMGs has it's problems, but how much so?

Will I need to replace the pots? I've heard that EMGs use 300k, while most BKPs are suited for 500k?

Thanks for the help guys ^_^

Hi,

i had to chime in here!

I have used EMG 81 in the bridge of my Jackson/Fernandes all neckthrough guitars with diffrent wood types since 1989. I made research bought 3 pickups and ended up with th 4th that was a Bareknuckle Miracle Man...and WOW!

I haven't had a thought on a EMG 81 since...

Sounds great!

Atm I think I'm looking at the Miracle Man, but I wish the BKP lads would make some tone charts :p

i have emgs, and iīm pretty confortable with them
i dontīplan to sell it, just to left them in a box.until i have more guitars toput them in
iīll put bkps on the schecter, that has emgs now.
emgs has 25k pots.
if you are changing from emgs to another brand, non active pickups, you will need 500 k pots.for SURE.
besides of that, i play a nailbomb. itīs awesome.
itīs just a little bit clouded for palm muted Speed/tremolo picking .. but besides of that, excellent for the style you mentioned

Sigh!

My priorities might have changed a bit when the single valve in my Vox started popping 20 mins ago.

Pain in the arse amp....

I refuse to spend Ģ50 to pay someone to put a valve into an amp which I spent Ģ80 on, so I'll buy a good amp ffs.

So now my choices are put some money towards an amp (will prolly have about Ģ400~) or play into a keyboard amp through my Boss ME-50 and get some Miracle Men.

The amp will prolly benefit me more =/

Hey mate,  Ok well I have a dual allen head MM in the bridge of and all birdseye guitar and now a cheap westfield gibbo copy and an 81 in a mahogany prs style guitar.

The MM is not scooped but has a slight dip in the mids whereas the 81 has a spike.   This makes fast runs sound alot more fluid (not that Im any good)  The bass is also different in the fact that its very low and huge and sooo tight, tighter than an 81,  pinch harmonics are about the same although they sound cleaner on the MM.
Im sorry to be persistant...but I'm on a mission to build the most badass guitar of all time.

The In Flames sound is the result of a big production with guitar tracks layered overdubbed etc. ... No pickup in the world will make you sound like an In Flames record.

Find out what your guitar sounds acoustically and where you want to get it with a pickup. That will make it easier to decide on one.

Dimebag used Bill Lawrence L500XL

Actually that is a well-known claim which apparently is not so true. Apparently he used pickups from the Seymour Duncan custom shop already much earlier in his guitars BEFORE Seymour made his signature pickup. Since all these pickups looked the same, it's hard to tell from when he started using Duncans.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Yeah, and they don't use a wall... Unless it's off stage... But frankly, I think the point of having a wall of amps is kinda defeated if you don't show the audience them :p

Ah, foiled! It looked like rectos from half way across the MEN, and with all the silly lights they had it decked out it it was a little hard to tell one black amp from another.

Definately 2 walls though. At least 12 heads on stage. I saw them with both my eyes.
