Bark @ the Moon - My right hand will not cooperate
« on: April 03, 2007, 10:01:15 AM »
I am getting so frustrated with my right hand speed limit on the palm mutes into chord stabs.

I just can't bust through the barrier to play "Bark At The Moon" at the correct performance speed.

I've been VERY diligent with the metronome and I just can't make "that jump"

I've plateaued.

Has anybody been at the palm mute into chord roadblock and found an exercise / riff that helped kick the door down?

My alternate/tremolo picking is spot on but my palm mutes are letting my down badly.

Any suggestions will be welcomed  :?

In my experience if you just keep practicing it then you will get it right eventually, at first i didn't like it but now i can play it fine.

You could try doing the same riff except on on the low e string and just practice the palm muted rhythm bit instead of it all at once since that's what you are having the most problems with.

Davey and I were talking about that song a couple of days ago, and I remarked how difficult a tune it is to play!

I think I can help you out, dude. TABs, etc to follow ...

Just dilligence really, i find it with alot of things, you'l practise it for ages and not get any better, then just as your about to give up you suddenly get better.

Trying mixing things up a bit, work on down picking for a while then switch to legato, then come back and see if its got any better.

Just remember to stay relaxed, don't tense up your arm and also control your breathing (surprising how much of a difference it makes).

what guage strings are you using? i have 11s on my ibanez and my les paul. i canplay it fine on my ibanez, but the LP has less string tension and i find it tricky on that

haha, i've been learning it recently too. the worst bit is that speed picked bit at the end of the solo in the middle of the piece. that's darn hard. jake e. lee = awesome.

i think practice is the only real way to do it, dave... i learnt it recently, so I was kind of already at the level where the riff wasn't really a problem (apart from the fast left-hand chord changes, lol, but that's not where you're having difficulties!), so I can't really give any specific pointers unfortunately. i guess just practice fast picking and palm-muting one note at first, with metronome, gradually upping the speed?

While I agree more tension will probably help, practice will help too... I can play it fine with 9's (then again, I'm used to 9's)...

Hey, what's going on here??!!
I was learning the riff from BATM and trying to get a decent JEL tone from my Line6 yesterday. Is there some kind of mind control, going on?

Only if you've got dinky little hands like Mr Lee.

I would also love to be able to play BATM, but I'm too old, lazy and untalented to bother.  Not sure which is the greater, my laziness or my lack of talent.

Good luck to you all.  :)

i remember that appearing in Guitar World...all the unusual techniques of JAke E.-check out "suicide Solution" live on Utube-he does everything-he is one unorthodox dude, but my fave part of his playing is the AGRESSION-you can hear him ATTACKING the damn thing-RR really knocked me out with how he was able to inject that energy...raw...wicked,man
