Author Topic: Peavey 6505+ tubes? (Read 5591 times)

Hi i finally got my peavey 6505+ head :-D tried it out and its got a great sound to it, just having some issues :-s not sure if its the fact that i cant go past 3 on the volume (residential area and parents at home) or the stock tubes, but i dont seem to have much sustain and the distortion can sound a little weak when trying to hold a note, chugging sounds brutal though.

Ive not taken much of a look but peering in the back i can clearly see that its running on ruby tubes and i seem to remember reading somewhere that theyre not very good, just wondering if theres any sugestions on replacement tubes or if theyd simply need the bias adjusting by a techy.

oh and if anyone can point me to that tube website, cant remember the name but theres a guy who runs a load of forums on tube help/advice.

those Peavey amps are notorious for having a cold bias from the factory. nothing wrong with Ruby Tubes, if they're still new I'd just bias the amp up properly.

what preamp valves are in there? - preamp valves are the easiest way to improve your tone.

Okay had a good explore today:

6x Preamp tubes jj ecc 83 s

4x Power tubes Ruby 6l6gcm str

All is new, had the amp from new since tuesday :-) was ordered about 3 months ago but apparently peavey were having trouble fullfilling orders, so it should be pretty fresh off the production line.

I wouldn't worry about the valves you have in there - all seems fine. You could get a tech to make sure it's biased right but there's no real reason to change those valves.

The JJ ECC83S preamp valves are a fairly neutral sounding valve - I'd probably try some EH ECC83s in that amp, they have a bit more zing to them.

If you really must try a different set of 6L6s, go for some JJ 6L6GCs - they're a pretty robust valve with a solid bass end.

WOW!?!?!!! i just blew up my amp :-) plugged guitar in, tired my mxr compressor pedal and there was a nice clunk sound and the amps lights went out, now it wont turn on, took less then a week to ruin it, great stuff :-s

Check the fuses, they can blow at the most inappropiate times

BTW if anything is going to break it's either going to be on the 1st powerup or within the first 2 weeks.

Okay so i sent the amp back to the shop i bought it from, had a phone call tonight, luckilly it was jsut the fuse that went :-) theyve been testing the amp for a few days and its running fine, apparently at the peavey factory they installed american fuses rather then english ones.

Actually found it quiet amusing and am glad to be getting the amp back in a few days, stupid peavey is all i can say.

So theres a tip if you buy an amp off them, check theyve put propper fuses in.

That's wierd because American fuses are higher rated than UK ones, because the voltage is less, they have to carry more current. I know on my Marshall I had to replace the 1 amp with a 3 amp.
