"The Blackening"

First post and nothing to do with the pickups!

Has anyone heard the new Machine Head album, the Blackening? If not you should check it out.

I lost them after the mediocre "The more things change", but this album is a welcome return of material that made "Burn my eyes" so good. But this is even better, the new guitarist Phil Demmel has really added value to the band.

The album is BADASS. Very heavy thrash tone (bit OTT for me - getting old), but the guitar work...awesome. Flynn and Demmel work so well together.

"Asthetics of Hate" really moved me as quasi tribute to Dimebag and anger outlash against his murderer. There's a giveaway Dime riff just before the solo, which IMO makes this song stand out, along with the beautiful interplay and harmonies between the two guitarists.

Anyway, listen to it. Highly recommended, trademark MH stuff with added guitar nourishment courtesy of Mr Phil Demmell.

*Now which pickups do I want* :P

Perhaps a copy of my customised miracle man, that, in the BKP spirit of naming pickups after their 'vibe', I've started to call...

....The Blackening

Stunning album, I absolutley love it (I got the pickup long before, though).

Cheers Philly, yes new MH album is a MUST...

I was so hyped when I picked it up at HMV, it reminded me of the happy day I bought "Burn my eyes" and the insane grin I had when I listened to that album.

The lead work on this album is outstanding...

PS no not my Vee's but one can dream eh? I think my missus would castrate me if I had that many!

I'm not a fan of MH, but i haven't heard of anyone who doesn't like this album! I must say it sounds a lot better than previous attempts, definatley going to be the best album they do, heard some thrash riffage which is always nice!

You should really check out their debut, that is also a blistering album and absolute classic must own.

The Blackening one is similar in style, but this album is whole a lot errr....richer....(like a Sarah Lee chocolate gateu).

Is likening metal albums to cakes allowed...?!

PS the solo in Asthetics of Hate is pretty close to my favourite solo of all time in Hangar 18 by Mustaine/Freidman.

Any mention of cakes is fine by me.

I think we should go a bit more upmarket than Sara Lee though!

Yeah i heard Burn My Eyes before and it wasn't that amazing if you know what i mean  I just heard some good thrash riffage form the start of the blackenings ecard and it sounded good, though i'm not a big fan of the vocals. Guitars are superb though.

The consensus round where I live and on boards seems to be that its better than 'Burn my Eyes'.

Which is oustanding, because even though I liked the more things change and through the ashes, and the burning red wasnt a bad album, just not good enough and misguided, I always thought a major detractor from the band was that they peaked so early and couldnt recover it.

And they have

Sometimes, just sometimes, I like being wrong  :D

Yes agreed, it is better than burn my eyes. Its a shame it took them so long to produce the "debut beater", worth the wait though...
