I have a (bad?) habit of totally killing the game where I just acquire everything and get the max stats on everyone. I did this on 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 FF-wise. I must have spent more than 100 hours on X replacing those damn .

Im just going back now and playing x to perfection ive done all 7-9 to perfection still not got hold of any earlier ones.

III is about to get a release on one of the handhelds soon.

I won't be getting XII. Real-time combat? You can take that and shove it where the sun don't shine. (Over in Slice, If I recall rightly :) ) It works fine in Street Fighter etc, but when you have multiple characters... And yes, I hated Command & Conquer too. I'm kind of partial to being able to think when I need to... :)

I don't much like Fps to be honest. Played Wolfenstein a lot, Doom too... But (shrug) tastes change... As for my favourite in the Final Fantasy series, I'd have to say IV(Easy) because I finished it. (The US version is easier than the untranslated version, apparantly)

Any self-respecting RPG player is going to be anti-FPS. They are anethema to each other.

FFXII is not straight real time combat; nor is it strictly turn based. It's much closer to FFF VIII than any other installment.

FF XIII is going to have straight up real time combat; I'm looking forward to that.

I spend an average of 100-120 hrs on each installment of FF. I just hit the 75 hr mark in XII.

SPOILER WARNING ABOUT FF XII: If you're playing XII and you're about to go into Guruvegan, make sure your main party is at LEAST level 50 and that you have every enhancement and Remedy 1,2, and 3 on the license board, as well as every +HP and +MP on the license board. You should have 3 Mist charges for all your party members. Spells everyone in your party MUST have ready in gambits: Dispel, Haste, Regen, Bubble, Esuna, Slow, Curaga, and Blizzaga.

That's just bollocks imo mate. I'm a self LOVING RPG fan that enjoys both genres.

FPSs are made for quick play and easy enjoyment, RPGs are made for involved story and time/effort correlated development.

Although I do agree that combinations just don't work - And most single player FPSs/Story based FPSs are a bore.

FF games aren't quite RPG games in my eyes anyway, more Adventure with some stats, well - atleast compared to other RPGs. They're quite watered down compared to most RPGs in terms of complexity and freedom.

Although I haven't got to play it yet, I've heard it's alot like the Kotor system.

Yup, XII is a liiiiiitttle bit harder than the previous installments :) Although having played some of the Japanese versions, I'm wondering if they simply didn't make it easier for Americans when they translated it :D

I did my usual grind of tooling up a few levels at the beginning, and it still kicks my arse. You soon realise you can't get by by simply being 5 levels above what the game expects at a perticular stage. Having said that, some of the status spells (sleep / slow / blind &c.) are much more effective in XII than previously which helps a bit ... sleep the boss then frantically heal :)

As for real time I was worried about that too and nearly didn't get XII becasue of it ... but XII isn't real time at all IMO as selecting any action for any character from the action menu pauses everything. Its just that you can assign automatic actions so it can look real time. I actually think the Gambits add a whole new interesting element to the game as you can do some sneaky stuff ... and also screw yourself utterly. FF X2 was kind of similar in a way with the attack chaining stuff.

If you loved the other FFs, you WILL love XII. It is everything you want from an FF, plus some new stuff to get to grips with. The characters, plot, world, side quests, level up system, monsters ... all of it ... its all superbly put together, distinctively FF and you're missing out on a superb game if you snub it because you feel its too different from the previous games in the series.

I hope you arent talking about Morrowind here! Such a great game, even if the combat isnt amazing. I'm yet to play Oblivion because my computer isnt good enough for it

Funnily enough, I've never really got into Final Fantasy, though I havent played one for ages, I didnt like the turn-based combat at all.

On the hijacking subject, I'm surprised we've got this far without anyone mentioning Zelda ... or some holy war between PS and Xbox fans kicking off ...

... ahhh, its nice to be somewhere where only meaningful arguments occur, like LP or Strat :D

ha ha... No, they took a few things out and made things easier for the SNES version. The version on PS1 is just a translated version of IV, not the cut down version...
